I bought a used 2000 GTI last fall. I found that the protection hose/boot covering the shaft as it enters the hull was cracked flooding the hull. Water didnt enter until I really gave it gas,and the crack was on the bottom of the hose making it hard to see. But now for the BIG mystery....I have replaced this hose twice this month, after the original hose had a crack.I bought this 2000 GTI used last fall. The shaft looks straight and the motor mounts seem sound.Any ideas!??!

Are you talking about the boot that holds the carbon ring? If you bought a good OEM boot, you shouldn't be having an issue... but if you over tighten the clamps, they can dig in, and split it.

How much water is coming in? By design... the carbon ring leaks. that's how it stays cool.

If it's something else... let us know.

I purchased both boots from the Honda store. The clamps were not overtightened. The hull flooded to the point that I had to get off the water for fear the bike might sink. The cabon ring had looked as if it was seeping a bit of water when I checked it before the big leak. Although the motor and shaft look aligned, could any other calibration or adjustment cause this leakage?

nope... if the parts are good, the water coming in should be minimal.

just a couple thoughts...

the part that the boot is clamped to could be cracked.

The O-rings in the stainless ring could be bad, and water is coming in there.

Is your bailing system working? if the little plastic pick-ups are plugged, or if the hoses are plugged, then you won't get rid of the water coming in around the carbon ring.

Dr Honda, I thank you for your advise. All of the above is operating properly. The protection boot is definitely split...TWICE. No other leaks. I purchased this bike used and the sellers didn't mention any problem like this. It is a real mystery. I do know that there should be no more than 4mm measuring distance on the boot, which I checked. It only ruptures when I increase my speed above 35mph, or when wakes are jumped.
