Several "key" questions

I bought my '08 180 Challenger SE used. In the glove box were two trainer keys. From reading the manual, those keys somehow limit top speed and possibly acceleration and are used for teaching a new driver. Questions:

1) Other than limiting top speed, what does a trainer key do?

2) When you buy new, what keys do you get and how many?

3) I think the trainer keys are actually for another boat (the dealer had two for sale) because neither seems to work. When I put in the key, I get one long beep instead of two short beeps. After about 10 seconds, it is followed-up with four fast beeps. Assuming these are the wrong keys and the dealer may not have extra keys for me, can these be easily (meaning, I can convince the dealer to do it for free for me) re-programmed to work with my boat?

Thanks,

Tim

Yup... one long beep is the computer saying it doesn't recognize the lanyard. The 4 short beeps after are just a reminder that there is a lanyard on the post... and the boat isn't running.

I haven't bought a new Doo... but I think the new ones will come with one of each. (Regular and learning)

I would go back to the dealer that you bought it from, and have him program your MPEM to those lanyards.

Did they give you a regular lanyard with the boat?

The learning lanyard limits top speed via a rev-limiter. I think it starts clipping the engine around 5500 PRM. (it may be lower)

Yes, I did get one regular key, which works fine. But I also got the two learners, which seemed like one more than I would expect. If I would guess, I would think it would normally come with one or two regular keys, plus one learner's key.

If they program the MPEM to the learner's lanyards, wouldn't that make the regular key not work? I was hoping they could re-program the keys to match the boat instead of the boat to match the keys.

Maybe if they haven't sold the other boat I'll be able to find my keys on that boat.

The keys are "Dumb" for a lack of better words. They have a chip with a serial number on them. SO... the boat's computer has to be programed to know that the number in the key is OK to start the boat.

Off the top of my head... I believe the boat can store up to 7 keys. If they program the learning key to your boat... you regular key will still work.

Since you got 2 learning keys... you may offer one for sale here. They don't go for much... but you can probably get $10 for it.
