Does that one have the forward/reverse lever? Is that what you mean by gear?

I have a 1998 GX, which has no reverse.

These PWC are all DIRECT DRIVE. That means NO gear box, and the impeller turns the same direction in forward, AND reverse. Reverse is simply a scoop gate that pulls down over the jet coming out the back, and re directing the water jet forward. If your control lever, or cable, or linkage that controls this gate is malfunctioning, you could have the symptoms you describe.

Now, there is the limited possibility that the splines on the driveshaft are stripped, however that is not real likely.

Anyway, your cylinder PSI should be new: 150/150, and then as it wears all the way down to 90/90, and then rebuild. HOWEVER, they should both be close to the same, ie 130/100 is BAD. It means one cylinder is bad. No more than 10 LBS diff, and more like 2-5 lbs diff is normal.

If you have still got the gray fuel lines, they will cause you mucho trouble, and they will need to be replaced. Search GRAY FUEL LINES, and read all about it. Search COMPRESSION TEST, and you will find out how to do it.

Also, try to avoid running that ski at speeds over 90 mph, as the traffic cops will give you a ticket!

Stick around, ask lots of questions, search them too, and your PWC will yield you much pleasure!

Wearing ring.....

Good post Nate!........

I think it may be his wearing ring.....if you'd like to take it from there, I got other posts..........you seem like you got this one under control......

OK, to be honest, My sea doo has never had the wear ring problem, HOWEVER, that item is in the category of tires on a car, or brake shoes. They commonly need replaced. It is a ring AROUND the impeller, that keeps the water moving efficiently toward the rear. When you suck rocks, it dings the impeller, and then usually gouges the wear ring. (This is supposed to save the impeller) So, you can have a perfectly running ski, and run WOT (Wide Open Throttle) over a gravel bar, and shred the wear ring fairly fast, if the rocks are the right size etc. When the wear ring is shredded, it will NOT take off fast, although once it gets going, it still will go pretty good. If you jump into the air, it will suck air (normal) and then cavitate (run in a vacuum) for longer, with a bad wear ring.

I have never replaced mine, and I don't know any more about them than what I read on this forum. However, there is alot of info around here, under HOW TO REPLACE WEAR RING. So, eventually you will have to do it, (and so will I) and depending on how shallow you WOT, will depend on how long it lasts!

Best I can doo for now...

Nate
