Seadoo pump question

I have a 1997 seadoo spx. I just got a good used pump that had shift play before I put the impeller and cone on. Now there is no play back in forth when everything is put together with the oil filled. I've read this is because the washer is pinched from picking it up by the housing allowing the shaft to move back. The impeller is not hard to spin but is not loose. Did I mess up the bearings ?

I couldn't understand that play either every time I put mine together it was snug, but free spun and everything worked fine. I changed wear rings and oil on 2 pumps a few months ago and both are still working. One is leaking oil but that's because of a seal toward the top, however I don't have to tools to push it out so just waiting for pump to fail and ill do a complete rebuild.

Any more imput? To clarify the pump has a little axial play when no cone is installed. When the cone is install and tightened it has no play. Impeller spins will the strength of your hand pushing.

Does it have a cone with the spring and pusher in it? If so, then you're probably okay. The pusher takes up the axial play

It does. I realized if I put the cone on and slowly tighten it the spring pretty much takes away the play with the pressure it holds on it. Still not sure since I've read here that if it has not play the bearing or washer is done for.

When tightening the impellor, try and hold the pump up, while doing so....155mm pump locked up on me yesterday while installing a ring. Also, its possible the tolerance is tight so a quick blip of starter may need to happen

You will know if the washer is pinched. Nothing will turn. I think it's fine and doing what it is supposed to do.

Yep, was going to say the same. My stock 95 XP800 came with the internal spring stopper thing in the cone. I noticed when installing new wear ring this weekend there was no axial play. You can still push it back to get play but it takes some force because of the spring.

I have a pump from a later model year on my other 95 XP800 and it doesn't have the spring stopper so it has axial play with the cone on and filled with oil.

Thank you guys. For going through one pump last season I didn't want to make any mistakes this time. I will be installing it asap.

Spxxx,

I know this is an old thread, but if you're still out there I could use your advice. I have the same problem with one of the pumps I repairs. Both have the spring loaded pusher in them. Once I tighten up both cones one spins fairly easily by hand and one only spins if I push it. With the one that doesn't spin easily, once I back off the bolts one full turn, it spins easily. What happened with your pump when you installed it with the tight impeller. Did it effect the performance any? Did you have any issues? If you did have issues, how were they fixed? Thanks for any help.

You need to make sure the shaft doesn't bind when you put the prop back on (this is called out in the manual). It can be finicky. Pop the prop off and reset the shaft then put the prop back on.

Could you explain a bit further? My impeller spins only if I push it with my hand. Not freely. However it doesn't get any tighter or looser. How to reset the shaft?
