Seadoo issues

Hello I am new to this site so bear with me. I picked up a 89 seadoo sp this past spring from an older couple who had not used it for about 5 years. It is in great shape and the price was right. I checked the compression first and it was 150 PSI so i new the motor was at the least in runable condition. I put a new battery in it and bought a carb rebuid kit and rebuilt it. I am mechanical so it was not that hard as i have done engine work in the past. The problem i am having is... it starts fine and runs fine for about a hour or less then just dies. Mostly in the middle of the lake. Usually it restarts and runs for a few moments and dies again. It repeats this until i am picked up by a passing boater and dragged to shore. Sometimes i choke it and hold the choke open a little to keep it running until i can get to shore. This gos on until it completely cools down then it starts idles and runs breifly then repeat the senario all over again. Is this a ignition coil issue? I am out of ideas with out replacing alot of parts that i do not know if they work or not.
 
Welcome to the seadoo forum timster1. Does it have fresh fuel? Is the fuel vent plugged by chance? Check the fuel vent line coming out of the fuel tank. Another way to check it is open the fuel cap and see if there is a huge vacuum in the tank when it does it again. Also on that model have you tried switching the fuel switch to reserve when it does that? It might be possible that the fuel baffle tube in the fuel tank is also full of crap, cutting down on fuel after a time of running. The cool down part tells me something is "relaxing" as such like tank pressure or plugged baffle tube...It does sound like a fuel restricted situation.
Do these checks and give us a shout back.
oh yeah, it must be cold riding in Indiana this time of year.

thanks Karl i did change the fuel to reserve a few times thinking the same thing but to no avail. I did change the fuel lines going into the tank they had ben shredded over time. Is there a filter in there some where as well? I also blew out or replaced the normal fuel lines going back to the tank and to the fuel filter which is fine. I will check the vapor lock issue you described. also i cleaned the tank out and check the fuel filter after every brief run nothing in there either. I am still stumped someone told me to replace the coil but i still think this is a fuel issue HELP...
 
If you have the gray fuel lines, they need to be changed. What happens over time they deteriorate from the inside out and clog the carbs. Even if you clean them it will keep doing it till you change them out. You can get replacment fuel line from Like Auto Zone and replace the clamps too if needed remember to use stainless steel ones. You need about 14' of fuel line if memory serves me right on that seadoo. With a seadoo that age it also might be the coil wire is corroded and not getting a good connection after it get hot. Remove the spark plug cap and cut 1/4" off the coil wire. Then replace the cap back on. I still think it might be fuel related. You have to be our eyes as we aren't there to help out, but we'll do out best to give you good advise.

when in the water, after the first time it shuts down.
and you restart, will it idle? dont gun the engine, just let it idle
will it stay running then?
might be the fuel valve, this will cause the ski to start and idle fine,
but when you accellerate, the ski will go bout 100 feet then die out
this process will repeat. rubbers in valve degrade and restrict fuel flow.
also take a short trip with the seat off, might have a exhaust leak and your choking engine out with fumes.

I had a similar problem early this summer. Mine turned out to be a loose wire going into the Multi-purpose electronic module (MPEM). Service man told me it's a fairly common problem, especially in skis that are trailered alot (which ours is). He also said it's best to catch this early cause if the module continues to get this on/off hit from the wire jiggling it can burn out the module or the computer, which turns into a VERY expensive fix. I don't know if your SP being an '89 is equipped with this module, but it's something else to look at. Just a suggestion.
