Hello,
I have a question for you guys on the forum. I have a 1996 Seadoo GTI 5865 thats been sitting for about a year now (had a bad starter) I got it running and it runs and idles good on the trailer, no problem. But its smoking quite a bit, at first I just thought it was burning off leftover oil from sitting so long, but I let it run for about 10 minutes and it was just as bad. I know 2 strokes smoke a lot, but I don't remember it being this bad. The smoke is a light gray and its filling up my yard with it, (driving away mosquitoes no doubt :P )

Also, I installed brand new sparkplugs. I ran the ski for about 10 minutes on the trailer and then turned it off and pulled the plugs to see if they were a chocolate brown, and they're clean/white. Which makes me think its running lean, but can it run lean and still have gray and heavy smoke? I'll post a few pictures if it helps any, it was a bit smokier before the picture, but the wind picked up.

I'd like to hear what you guys think this could be from, maybe it just needs a good riding on the water to break it in again :P

The smoke could be caused by excess oil in case leaking pas the seals, and up into the cylinders and left on the walls / rings. Be careful running that long out of the water if it has a carbon seal. If it has the carrier bearing, it is not as sensitive.

Okay, thank you. It does have a carbon ring, I'll make sure to be careful about that.

I just want to be sure its getting some oil. The spark plugs being clean is a bit suspicious to me.
and if its getting to much oil, I'd like to find a way to fix the issue. Is there a way I can be sure its excess oil from the cause without ripping the engine out?

If the oil pump cable breaks or gets stuck it will go to full flow on the oil. Check that. Also, the plugs really wont show color just running on the trailer for a few minutes. You really have to lake test it for a few minutes for a good plug check. If it is smoking like that and was running fine in the past, you likely are OK. I assume fuel lines have been changed and the carbs are clean?

Thanks for the info.
I had the carbs off and cleaned them up about a week ago, they were already surprisingly clean. The oil pump cable was fine and intact when I had the carbs off, I wonder if its possible I hooked it up wrong? I doubt it. I'll check again tomorrow.
as for the fuel lines, I've never replaced them since I've owned it. Maybe the previous owner has. I'll have to check that aswell.

1) as you said... 2-strokes smoke. AND, its been sitting. The only way to clear that out, is to get some heat in the engine. That means to put it in the water, and run it to clear it out !!

2) 10 minutes on the hose is BAD ! The carbon seal is cooled/lubed from the lake water. So... you ran it dry, and it may now not seal properly.

Thanks for all the help. I'll get it on the water soon and run it. I'll also keep an eye on the carbon seal for leaking, hope I didn't ruin it :/
