SBT snap rings instead of circlips on a 951?

Ordered up wrist pin bearings and circlips from SBT to do the top end on my 98 XP 951 and they sent four inner snap rings that match the ciclip diameter.

I have never seen snap rings used in place of circlips....... Is there something I'm missing or is this a new thing?

SBT seems to use those. I would get the correct normal circlip type. Part#290845465.

I have a 97 GTX and 97 GTI with SBT engines. I pray those are not retaining the wrist pins, but probably are.

Took my old pistons out of my 950.

Installed an OEM circlip in one, a snap ring in the other.

Put an old wrist pin in each, took a deep socket and hammered the socket on the end of the wrist pin.

The snap ring took a few hits and pushed out of the groove.

The OEM circlip blew the outer casting of the piston out.

I'll stick with circlips.

I'm not trying to take a stab at SBT at all they got my wrist pins here FAST, will have my XP on the water soon and they were really helpful on the phone. But I do not understand the snap ring idea.

My first 947 repair a couple years ago and I didn't know at the time the engine was SBT. Low compression on the PTO cylinder. The snap ring had come out and the wrist pin had worn a deep deep goove in the cylinder. The cylinder was ruined. If I had known what I know now we'd have replaced the engine. About 2 years later the connecting rod came throught he side of the block.

I bought they ski last month and put a new engine in it which I am breaking in at this time.

NO SNAP RINGS for this ole boy !!!
