Stripping down my engine found sand in jug water galleries and one of the plugs on the exhaust was cracking so I pulled it out and found the whole exhaust was plugged up with sand .......this is not good..... how do I stop sand getting back into system and how the hell did it get in there

Your jet pump pulls water in to cool your engine. So if you ran in shallow water or beach it or jump waves in shallow water sand will be pulled into your pump then goes into your head and water jackets, it will go out the head into the head pipe. This is why you should stay away from shallow areas and always flush your machine after each ride. And if you ever beach your machine, before you start it get behind the machine and using the grab bar, push the machine away from you and then pull it back a couple times, that will clear out any sand or rocks out of your pump. Also the head pipe plugs are known for corroding away, make sure you have both of the plugs on the bottom fixed/welded. I have only had 1 pipe out of all the 787s we have bought be in good shape, they have either been welded already or they have holes in them.

If you do ride at the beach you can install a sea-strainer. It mounts on the 1/2" hose from the pump to the engine and has a stainless steel filter to trap the sand and debris. They have a clear top so you can keep an eye on them. You will have to be careful and keep the filter clean because if it clogs your engine will not get cooling water but it will keep the sand out. I think they are $30 and I useed to use one when I rode the surf.

Yup the strainer def helps, as well as NOT driving in shallow water. When you beach it, hit the stop button BEFORE you hit the sand, and when you pull it back out make sure to lift and lower the hull a few times. That will make water flush thru the pump and keep you from blowing sand into the system.
