Safety Lanyard Doesn't Beep???

I just found this forum - thought someone might be able to offer me some advice.

I've got a 96 Seadoo that hasn't been used for a couple of years. Last time we had it in the water, the safety lanyard got pulled loose and it wouldn't run from that point on - couldn't get it to beep when plugging it in like it would normally do.

That was at the end of the summer and it hasn't been used the couple of summers since. Decided to try to get it running again - went to the local dealer and thought I could just buy a new key/lanyard.

They told me it could be three things:

1. It could be a bad lanyard/key. Apparently the old ones have a microchip and that can get wet fairly easily. If it does, the key is ruined. When I bought this jet ski, the previous owner had told me they had to replace the key once - assuming that might have been the reason why. Also assumed that this was the problem this time.

2. They also told me it could be bad where the key plugs in on the handle.

3. Or it could be a bad computer (which could cost over $1000 to fix).

I haven't got into the fuse box yet - he said if the 5 amp fuse is blown that the computer could be bad (also could be blown from hooking up the battery backwards). Told me to get a battery and see if I had power to the guages - which I may do.

Anyway, I'm not wanting to spend a bunch of money on it. The new key/lanyard is $53 plus $20 to put a code on it. The battery is going to cost at least $50 there. I know I'll have to buy new spark plugs, fuel filter, etc.

Just looking for any advice/suggestions, etc on what I might look at or try. I hate to spend $150 on it for battery, key, etc if the computer is bad (not going to pay that much to fix a bad computer - the jet ski is barely worth that running).

Thanks!

I've read your possibilites and either one of them could be true.

I would start with a power source, put ya a good battery in it and see what it does then.

If nothing.....I would start by making sure your beeper is working properly, without that, its a lot harder to diagnos the prob.

I would also go ahead and check your fuses and make sure the connections are clean on them.

You could also try using some hot water and dish soap, and clean the post that your key goes on, that way you know thats clean and one more prob out of the way. (dont use wire brush or anything aggressive).

Try those things and get back to me, if it comes down to it being the computer, theres a diode that can be replaced if it comes to last hope.

Hope this helps!

Thanks!

I'm trying to charge the old battery - but I think it is shot. Can I use a lawnmower battery or jumper cables from a truck battery to temporarily get power? Or will that do damage to the electrical system?

thanks

You CAN you jumper cables, but ONLY WITH THE OTHER VEHICLES/BOAT'S KEY OFF.
That way you dont fry the MPEM...

Be sure not to ever cross battery cable, or hook battery up backwards, a lot of time the computer/MPEM fries instantly.

I've used a lawnmower battery just to temp get power, but not to use on the lake.

Hope this info helps!

Cut your losses

Hi. If you read all of the posts here and apply it to the ski you have you can do the math. When these things work they are alot of fun. When they work being the key words. With this ski sitting like this there will be a multi tude of procedures to go through. You will invest alot of time, money and frustration. Ask yourself how often you think you will ride it. Do you have any one else to go with. Dont get me wrong, while i have had them, they have been fun. Luckily I can do all the work myself with some pointers from the people here, not everyone can do this and then cause more damage to the ski.
I'm sure you will make the right decision. In the mean time i will be selling my 96 SPX and 96 XP
