RXT-X 260 front storage strut

Hey all, fairly new Seadoo owner from Oz here. Recently purchased a tidy 2013 RXT-X 260 RS. Unfortunately I havent been able to put a lot of hours on it yet, but so far I love it. What a machine!! I stumbled across your forum and this facebook page in my searches, heaps of great info on both. I have a question, so I thought Id post it here for your help. Im guessing most if not all of you know what the part in the picture is. Those who dont, its the end piece off the shock that holds the front storage hatch open. It seems that no matter how gentle you are with opening and closing the hatch, these break. From my searches it appears to be pretty common (this is my second one), and Im wondering if anyone has come up with any other part (after market) or solution to this? Im sure I saw something in my pre purchase searching where someone had drilled the end cap out and put a bolt of correct diameter through, but now I cant find it. Thanks, Ant.

First off welcome to the forum!, Not sure just looking at that pic but would it be possible to put some heavy shrink wrap around the end once its on and then shrink it to add some "squeeze" all the way around the end to kinda keep it together?

Most don't break them. Most have them pop off. Seadoo drilled out the rivet and moved the mounting over like a half an inch and the problem went away. I own the 09 RX and had to replace mine once as the strut jammed open, other than that, never an issue with it.

Thanks Coastiejoe, but im not sure we are talking about the same part? The mounts on both my ski and the hood are part of the molded plastic and cannot be moved as far as I can tell.

You could be correct, I know the 2010 era has rivets. I just assumed the newer models do as well..

So anyway, i had a look at this properly today and set about coming up with a solution, other than paying seadoo $20 every time these break. I thought i would post it up here incase anyone else has the samr issue. So off to Bunnings (big hardware store chain in Aus) i went and i came up with this. I have used a 1/4" by 60mm stainless bolt with matching nylock nut and 2 stainless washers. I drilled through the old plastic strut top piece where the little plastic arms would normally be. I then reattached it to the strut and aligned it with the mount on the hood. Luckily the hood mount has a hole straight through it. So with everything lined up where it should be i was then able to pass the bolt straight through before placing the final washer/nut on the other side and tightening it all up. Looks good and seems to do the job. Hopefully it should last longer than the original plastic piece.
