All,

I have a 2010 RXT-X 260 that has stripped the splines at the impeller and I need to remove the old drive shaft. The down loaded manual that I could find was a 2011 which does not show how to remove the 2010 drive shaft since it is different. Does anyone know how to get the shaft out of the engine. I have the supercharger removed and the exhaust chamber moved back and can see the boots but cannot figure how to remove it from the engine. Can anyone help and tell me how this is done?

Pull the Carbon Seal retaining clip that is under the collar. Then pull the pump. Should slide right out then.

There's a special tool required to remove the retaining clip under the boot and around the drive shaft. There may be another thread somewhere here that describes the procedure, but in older (rusting) models it can be quite a pain in the neck. Make sure you've removed all the oil from the engine, or it'll spill out when you remove the drive shaft. Good luck.

Penetrant fluid is your friend. Spray the shaft and collar area well. Tap the collar for and aft to get the rust ring to break free. Once you see the collar moving to the rear a bit, pry the collar back far enough to see the clip under it. Many use a tiny pick tool to get under it and then a screwdriver to get it up off the shaft. Wear safety glasses as it may FLY off. Some use an O-ring instead of the clip. If so in your case, replace it with the clip style. Better design.

In 2009 and part of 2010 they used a different driveshaft that had a LEFT handed nut as part of the collar on it instead of the collar system with a c-clip. It didn't take them long to realize it was a bad idea and they switched back.

To remove the nut, you have to hold the end of the driveshaft (or lock the engine with the crank lock tool) and turn it left handed. Not difficult to take off but kind of a pain. Check the 2009 manual supplement for complete instructions, can be downloaded for free, just google it.

Yes, that is what it is a large nut like between the engine and the graphic collar. This is very helpful. I will try that this evening. I do not have any rust only have 45 hours total just the bad drive shaft that sheered the splined end in the impeller when I was doing about 35 mph cruising. Had to be towed 2 miles back to the dock.

That's what I thought. Once you break it loose, it will come off pretty easily. Remember, it's left handed so it will seem like you are tightening it.

If you need a new driveshaft, I'd change to the traditional collar with c-clip and get rid of that nut.

Did you download the manual?
