That "ring" is called a rub rail. That piece that looks cracked is just the insert that has popped out. To fix it, hit it hard a few times with a rubber mallet. It just pops in. It is used to hide the rivets that hold the rub rail to the boat.
Okay....what crack are you guys talking about? I'm talking about the vertical crack on the rub rail just to the left of the winch. It appears to me to be a split in the rail.....

yes but if you look to the right of the crack, the rubber has popped out of place where you can see the rivet. once you pop that back into place with the rubber mallet the crack will probably close up so it's at least not so noticable. Griz either meant spray lubricant behind the rubber where you have to smack it back into place or he got confused with a question for Dr. Ruth.
spray where ur gonna hit with rubber mallot, not the vertical crack, the horizontal crack above the strip, or should i say lube strip, and pop it back in place
Yeah once you pop it back in the track that gap will close up. Almost looks like a cut to me. Like it was the seam. Usually the rub rail goes around the boat and meets up somewhere in the back and is covered where you dont see it. Maybe someone replaced it at some point and the seam ended up there? I wouldnt really worry about it unless it just drives you nuts.
