Rough idle (1996 GTX)

Well I put my running 96 GTX in the water for the first time yesterday. I didn’t ride it but just backed it up and let it float on the trailer so I could run without flushing it. Overall it does not seem to run to bad but I do have a couple more questions.

I checked the compression before I put it in the water. The front cylinder was around 151 while the rear was around 148 psi. From what I have read on this forum, that is pretty good compression but please correct me if I am wrong.

The ski idles around 3,300 out of water and between 1,500 and 1,600 in the water. This seems to be right from what I have found on here also.

Now the ski still has the nasty grey fuel lines on it but I am planning on changing them out this weekend, provided my new lines come in today. I am also planning on pulling the carbs and giving them a good cleaning this weekend. I bought a small pump yesterday to so I will also be draining the gas and replacing it with some good petrol.

Back to the running yesterday. Ok this is kinda hard to explain but I will try. Those of you who know the 787 motor will probably get what I am saying. So when the ski is at idle in the water, the motor vibrates a little and I know this is normal. But after a few seconds of smooth ideling it gets a little rough for a couple seconds and the motor shakes twice as bad. Then it goes back to smooth for a bit and then the same thing over and over. Sorry for the bad description… I forgot to check the plugs yesterday after I ran it but I checked them this morning. The front cylinder plug is black and the rear is about the same. You can see the pictures below. The 1st pic is the front and the 2nd is the rear. I did gap them before I put them in. I am wondering if the rough idle could be coming from trash in the carbs, fuel lines, or bad gas. Could anyone shed a little light on what may be happening? Again, sorry for the bad description and thanks for any help.

Always change to new plugs first at notice of a small running change. If that don't cure it, you got problems like you already have mentions and you could have more than that, especially if the ski had no pre-ride or annual maintenance. Bill

If you have a performance issue, fix it before it becomes Costly $$$$$$$$$$$.

Sounds like a dirty carb. With the gray lines... I bet you will find the internal filter plugged up... or that your needle valve is sticking.

How is it at full throttle?
