hello all
got this project I am finally getting around too...brief history..91 xp friend A bought from friend B, within a week got sold to friend C cuz A is scared of water(long story)...B moved out of town...and then C went to use it for the first time and had starter issues, went out to help him diagnose and needed rebuilt starter, put starter in and ran good and nice on trailer in water, he didn't take it for a run until next day when we were gone....forgot to put plug in it and filled engine compartment, and engine full of white foamy frothy goodness....went out the next day and helped him tear it down and left him with case to split and clean out and then was going to help him re assy....well two yrs later I traded a lawnmower for this thing.....I had scored a goos used crank and am gonna clean it up and put it back together.....I remember friend B said it was freshly rebuilt and a strong runner...also remember him mentioning mods, but don't really remember....now that I am getting cses washed out and ready to put back together I am noticing these rotary mark discrepencies and am wondering if he had changed rotary valve....cylinder look like it was a fresh rebuild and pistons are .020 over and rings in good shape, very little carbon on pistons indicating to me it had very little run time on it....here is the scribed mark and nipple on case of rotary valve....def not in same position, also a pic of rotary valve....is this all stock and should be lined up with nipple or scribed mark??

sorry for long post but I know more info makes it easier for others to respond....obviously yellow 587 too
thanks
cheers
josh

hard to see scribed mark cuz of flash but almost vertical and directly to the right of flash reflection

this is the valve that came out of it and it ran fine for the short time it did run before it got full of water

its def not symmetrical but I am looking to find out if that is stock rotary valve and why that scribe mark is there...I though the nipple was the factory timing mark? that leads me to believe that this is not factory timing scribe mark....unless I am completely wrong and that is stock valve with factory scribe mark??I will have a hard time setting timing if I don't know what timing is supposed to be if it is aftermarket valve....I am not extremely familiar with these rotary valve setups

I vaguely remember there's an arrow off sorts on the case. Been years since I dickered with one of these 580's. I'll try and look it up later.
