From looking at the diagram im missing a few rings and such....

are these rings maybe inside that metal piece in the above picture?

sorry about the large pictures. i resized them in photobucket, but they are still coming in HUGE!

Hi,

OK... the diagram up top is a 96 and newer parts explosion. It is showing the carbon seal. What you have in your hand is the old style bearing pack. The chewed up rubber was probably the boot that goes over the PTO to hold grease in the splines of the drive shaft. (i'll take a picture). If the bearings and seals are good in the part you are holding... you can just re assemble it. (you need hose clamps on the boot of that seal pack)

OK...

this probably the chewed up rubber part (#4 in the pic above)....

it is held on the PTO with Okeeter clamps, but I normally just use heave duty zip ties to hold it on. There is also a little rubber plug that goes into the end of the driveshaft to keep it from beating the back of the PTO. (#12)

Here is an old style seal. You will need 2 big hose clamps to hold it in place. If that slides off... you will take in water very quick. Oh... and be sure to grease everything.

Good luck

One Last thing... why did you replace the PTO? If it was warn out... the driveshaft probably needs replacing too.

#9 is the retaining ring for the stainless ring.

#7 is an O-Ring seal for the stainless ring.

#8 is the stainless ring.

All of those parts are for the "Carbon seal" that you don't have. Please re-read my first post. Also, please answer the question in post 5.

You have what you need to put it back together.

I just noticed somthing... the seal in you hand is for a 95 and older boat. In your avatar it says 96. Go look at you boat and tell me the last 2 digits of the hull number.

The last owner could have installed the old style seal, but let's make sure of what boat we are working with.

its a 96 sportster...

Last 2 of the hull is "96"

SO the new PTO came in. this one is black? Are the replacement parts black?

Just want to make sure i have the right thing before i start assembling.

Also when i take the old PTO out what should i grease before re-assembling?

The PTO can be any color since it fits other engines that are painted other colors.

You will want to grease the splines on the drive shaft at both ends... and since you have the old style seal... make sure the roller bearing in it is free, and clean. Then grease that. After it's all together... give the 2 grease nipples a few pumps of grease, and you should be good to go.

yes. the bearing is just behind the black lip seal. Put your finger in the hole, and you will feel it. If I was still at my shop, I would take a better picture for you.
