My challenger 180 according to the dealer, has had its ECM plug probed to the extent that it is not making a good connection. They say they need to replace the whole wiring harness for over $1000 in order to even start diagnosing what wrong. I saw an ECM plug for about $20. Is that something that is repairable? Would it be recommended to try that first, or is the standard practice just to replace it?

The (AMPhenol) connector pins and parts are available as far as I know and it should be repaired, IMO. It might take up to a couple of hours labor to do this if everything goes well and assuming your repair station can do this.

You might be able to obtain a used harness as perhaps, a less expensive option.

Any way you look at it, this repair and diagnosis will take time to accomplish, thus it's going to cost you something to have someone repair your boat for you unless you can do the work yourself.

I repinned my 08 seadoo ecm plug and it took an entire day to get everything right but I tested every line and everypin location. It was under 100 for all new stuff but it is time consuming and frustrating. You have to make sure you have the patience and ability. Also only remove and replace one or two pins at a time and make sure that you have a good wiring harness diagram and figure out how to read it before you start. I dont know where I got the supplies but do some digging and you can find the exact female pins. Good luck. As much as I hated doing it I am glad I did.

The other option is, if you can get a plug with a pigtail on it. If so, cut your wires one at a time, slide heat shrink onto the wire, twist the wires together and then solder them. Bend the soldered joint against the wire, slide the heat shrink up over the soldered joint, heat it and then move onto the next one.

Here is a link to the lights I put on my trailer, it shows how I soldered and sealed the wires...
