Hi i am looking at buying a 2000 sea doo 16ft speedste 240 H.P. merc motor but it starts up and runs but it stalls at idle, but it will start right back up, as soon as u throttle up to start to go and plane out it runs great, can any give me an idea what is wrong, thanks brandon

Welcome.

Let me start by saying that I don't like the Merc powered boats, so take this with a grain of salt.

The Merc powered boats are great, as long as they don't have issues. SeaDoo no longer supports them, and some Merc dealers wont work on them either. The parts are very expensive, and now there have been reports of some of the engine sensors being discontinued. Also, since SeaDoo only used that drive system for a few years, we don't have too much knowledge on them here on this board.

With that said... I would not buy that boat, unless it was VERY cheap. You could find yourself quickly dropping $500 to $1000 on it for a couple fuel pumps, and since it's an intermittent problem... it may be hard to track down without the help of a dealers computer to plug into the fuel system. (assuming it's fuel injected)

If you do buy the boat, we will help as much as possible, but the fuel system is complex. There is 3 fuel pumps, and a goofy fuel mixing tank, and a recirculating injection system. My guess if it runs at full throttle, but stalls at an idle, the regulator is bad, an injector is hanging open, or the TPS sensor has gone bad.

Good luck, and let us know what you decide.

thanks for your reply, i was told by a couple people that they are great untill they have problems, i am going to pass on this boat and look for one that has a twin sea doo motor or a 4 stroke, which one would u recommend, i wouls like to stay 1998 and newer and 16 ft, thanks brandon

If you want twin 4-strokes you will be looking at boats around 2006 or newer.

The small speedster/sportster had a single 4-stroke in 2004. But it's a 4 seat 15' boat.

More or less... any of the larger SeaDoo boats from 2000 to 2005 will have a Merc drive. The smaller boats still had EFI 2-strokes (just as expensive for injection parts) or a single 4-stroke.

if i find a 240 merc that runs good, should i buy it or just look for something else, i just really like the 16ft the other new boats are to small and i don't want a challenger thanks Brandon

Sure... if you find a Merc powered boat, and it's in good running order, and the price is right... sure, buy it. Just keep in mind why you passed on the one we were talking about though.

Knowing you want a 16' boat, I would look for a late 90's Speedster (regular or SK) They are 16' with twin 2-strokes. There was one local to me that sat for $4500 for 3 months, and it was VERY clean. Since you are considering a 2-stroke Merc, I would think a Rotax 2-stroke would be OK too.

Pesonally... the only Merc boat I would buy is an Islandia. I can't afford a new one, and I like them. BUT... the price would still need to be good enough that if I needed to swap an engine, it is within the budget. There are just too many of the smaller boats with other power options to consider a Merc.

let me know if u see one around, i live up north sault sainte marie michigan area, so there are not too many here, thanks brandon
