Problem with Speedster cavitation

Guys,

I am new to the forum and I have a question about my 97 Speedster before I start to tear it apart. This is a recently purchased boat and I was told it had a problem with losing power above 4000 rpm. The hull was in great shape just needing a few small fixes to hatch catches and the plastic hinges, the interior is new, both engines run excellent and I got it complete with galvanized trailer for only $2,500 Well I dropped the boat in the water to give it a test and sure enough at about 3500 to 4000 RPM the boat began to cavitate and would not plane. I brought the boat home and have inspected all things I can see without taking things apart. The tolerances on the wear ring look very tight and closer than the recommended maximum of .040 and the impellers are in nice shape. I did notice that the white plastic tube that penetrates the underside of the hull from the engine bay surrounding the impeller shaft to be cracked on the starboard side and actually broken off almost flush with the hull on the port side. Would this part missing or being damaged cause this effect in both engines? If so, do I need to pull the entire pump assembly from the boat to replace the parts? Would you suggest replacing the wear rings anyway if I take things apart to this level? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated because I am dying to get this boat moving the way it should.

Thanks for nothing...

I never did get any reply from anyone about my problem but decided to read through every thread I could find about the subject of cavitation and I found one interesting story about checking the carbon ring and the driveshaft boot. I checked both shafts and found the contact pressure very light on both and a clamp missing on one. I fixed the things I thought could be the issues for zero cost and took the boat for a ride. It took off without hesitation with no cavitation problem evident at all. This boat really screams. I was impressed to read 58 to 59 on the speedo on glass like water. Not sure how accurate it is but I will confirm another night with GPS. The forum was very helpful even without direct help, so thank you. I now have a great boat for really cheap money. The guy who sold it to me so cheap would have made several thousand more if he had just did a little research and fixed the problem himself.

Scotto sorry to hear your post got missed, sometimes you have to repost if you dont get an answer, it happens to me and others as well. I know its a busy time here being pre season, and the main guys on here get pretty busy trying to answer all the posts, and my hats off to them for the reason its all volunteer work for them. Dont let one bad time keep you from here, alot of great info and people on this site......and wow you got one hell of a deal on your boat wish. Anytime I can help out shoot me a line....

Welcome to the seadoo forum. Sorry your post got missed. It is getting real busy here on the forum, and with only a few staff members, it hard to see every post in every thread. We are getting close to 5 pages of new threads daily...at about 25 per page. So even when I spend 4 hours here a day, which is a volunteer for free position, some post just get missed. I even still get close to over 30 "PM's a day, which I polity tell the member to post in the forum as We are only human and couldn't possibly answer every one. It is up to the members to help out too and reply to other members. Again sorry you got missed but as you now know there is lots of information if you just look around a little bit.

driveshaft protectors

I cut both shaft protectors off flush with the underside of the hull with a hacksaw blade in my hand, cracked them lengthwise and totally removed them.

Figured I would get a little attention with the heading but seriously the forum helped in a major way. Thanks again

Did it fix the issue? I currently have one engine that has a cavitation problem and found that the protector is broken ob that one motor and it's fine on the other motor. I was thinking of removing it tonight and test on the weekend.
