Hey guys I just got my 97 challenger! Took it out to the lake this morning and it went like snot for the first hour I was out. Went in for lunch and got te tube pumped up and when I tryed to take off te left engine would die almost as soon as it hit 3000 rpm! I couldn't get anywere!! So I Just got home and my left engine each cylinder has 120 and on the right engine has 140. Dead on each side..... Is the left side cooked? It runs good still and kinda can't build rpm to get past 3000rpm. Anyone have a y ideas on my problem?!
Any help would be awsome! Thanks alot

it converts the ac current, that the stators' puting out, to DC. If bad, it wont allow it to rev...bog out and die. Yellow 1in square lookingthing, weither located on a bracket off the motors or in the grey ebox. Should be 2, one for each motor. Can fire up motors, hold idle at 5500rpm, or how high you can get it, and volt testthe battery, should read around 13.5-14.5v

alright, cuz ur avatar states speedster, but your starting "thread" said challenger...:ack:

Fire sboat up(bad motor), and volt test battery.

iv been reading lots on this and i seem to think itr just might have somthing todo with impellor cavitation? anyone else think that cuold be a possiblilty?

thanks

Okay well just a update... I pulled off the jet housing and the impellers are toast along with the wear rings!! Gonna order new ones tommorow. And then I guess il go from there! Il keep you updated!!
Thanks again.

No, but both wear rings had big lines all around cut out a cm deep and chunks missing. Also the impelliers are both chipped and scared very bad!

yukon? that in the states? if so, order sbt impellors, they'll ship'em tomorrow, get the new ones, and send your old ones back, for 50 buks for both.

Even with the driveshaft/s out you can still test the charging stuff, one at a time - but as Seadooya mentioned cavitation makes the motor spin fast like a car stuck on the ice, a car that will not rev up has something else going wrong - fuel is the most likely troublemaker in the 2stroke families but also easily fixed by most home mechanics - just cleaning out a lot of little places where goop collects, anywhere air leaks in is as bad as fuel leaking out cause the surging is caused by this, be sure the oil system is drinking by marking the tank and run one motor at a time till you know you are not going to kill one or both.

Alright well I ordered new impellors and wear rings. It just seems weird how it ran awsome with no problems for the first hour and then it just stopped and wouldn't go anywere and the one engine would die. While I'm waiting or the parts to come in what should I look at for fuel problems? Maby fuel filters are clogged? I'm gonna check the fuel lines also and the fuel pump. Any other ideas to look at fuel wise?

dont know if ask, but with motor dying, i'd think its stating its "siezing"...whats the compression?

Yes it does.... However that kills it instantly! It's wierd both engines at wide open throttle kind of have a pulsing noise...?

Reading thru your postings . Initially , it sounded like your engines wouldnt make RPM's past 3000 , which sounded like ( a problem I had ) the neutral safety switch. When you discovered the wear ring impeller issue , it may have been secondary to the initial problem.
I only found out about that problem by asking for help here and getting advice from these guys.

I had almost exactly the same thing happen. Ran great on friday , then terrible on saturday. It turns out the neutral safety switch under the throttle handles had gotten full of gummy junk over the years. Once I freed it up , the boat ran great again.
Since your boat is down till the parts come in , it might be a good idea to soak those throttle handle screws with some WD40 or similar penetrant , get that assembly out and have a look and see if the switch is stuck down while in forward . Use an ohm meter to check. Part#30 on this link.

Good luck.

Okay well I will look at that tonight. Also I'm gonna look over all the fuel lines and components and then go see if that helps at all.
