Hello everyone,
I'm wondering if I should ask for some of my money back on this one. I have a 1994 GTX. It wouldn't go above idle this year so i took it to a local mechanic that covers all sorts of power sports. They are nowhere near a lake so they can't water test it.
I told them I already emptied out all the gas and blew out all the lines that I could and i was sure that it was a carb problem.
Anyway, I took it to the mechanic, and he advised me that the gas still smelled bad, so he drained it and then also put in new spark plugs and "adjusted" the carbs. I asked him what he could have possibly adjusted, as I already indicated to him that I had tried every possible setting on the low speed screw as possible but he insisted that he adjusted them to work. When i got it back, it ran fine on the trailer, same as it did when i brought it in.
To no surprise I drove it all the way to the lake only to have the same problem. 40 minute drive.I bought it back to the guy. A week later, he calls to say that he blew out the PTO carb with compressed air and now it's really working well. I take it to another lake where my friend lives and it gets to full power then falls flat on his face. if you let it idle for awhile longer it will do the same thing again and again.
By this point I was very upset. I have some mechanical ability, but I had taken it to a mechanic because I don't always have the time to tinker. Anyway, I pulled off the rotary valve assembly (it's a 1994 so the whole thing has to come off just to get the carbs off), pulled the PTO carb and the internal filter was completely caked with crud. I cleaned it out, reassembled and now the ski runs great.
My question, maybe from some of you skilled mechanics, is whether you think I have a legitimate beef here. I paid a total of $125 for essentially, some gas to get sucked out, new spark plugs installed, and a blast of compressed air into my carb (i had already removed the air box for him.)
Thanks for your opinions.
