Noticed this oily residue from the exhaust on the '97 GTI. Seems to be a water-oil mix.
Normal?
I've not had it hooked to a hose or anything, just ran it for 15 seconds or so a few times. Maybe the previous owner didn't do a good job of blowing out the water from the exhaust?

If I had to guess, it is nothing more than your 2-stroke oil mixed with residual water that was in the exhaust.

It looks fine to me; it could be all of the fogging oil; it could be just old water that's dirty, and could just be old water.

It sounds perfectly normal, it is a 2-stroke, and there's always some water in the exhaust, without taking the exhaust apart there's no way to blow out all of the water. Have you had it out on the lake yet?
