Oil ratio during break in on new 787

Hi guys it’s been a long NY winter and it’s finally time. I’m going to make the maiden voyage on my 96 xp. I had it rebuilt over the winter and my mechanic recommended a oil block off. What is a good ratio for the break in period 32:1,40:1? Also is there too much riding during the break in? I was planning on running a full tank today is that ok? Thanks for the help!

I just did a complete rebuild of a 787 myself. I also did the top end on an SPI. I did some reading and research. I'm running 32 to one mixture on them and plan to bring extra spark plugs. LOL I found the break-in procedure I am going to use and it is recommended by SBT. Since I don't have the link I'll post a couple of lines of the document that should answer you question.

SBT
SBT Seadoo engine breakin procedure - If you have a pre-mix system (mixing oil and fuel in the fuel tank), then you should richen the ratio to about 32:1 for the first ten gallons of gas. If you have an injection system (putting oil in a separate oil tank), then you should put 50:1 premix in the fuel tank along with the oil injection system for the first ten gallons of gas.

There is no reason to dich the oil injection. Properly maintain it and it will not let you down like other brands.

Us old two stroke motorcycle guys are difficult to convince on the oil injection. We've lost many an engine due to failures of pumps, lines, gears, and the like. Also when you disassemble an engine and the furthest cylinder from the pump has the most wear, then the middle cylinder has less, and the cylinder closest to the pump has no wear.... you don't forget things like that. I won't argue the oil pump is a good thing to have but before I rely on a 20 year old oil pump, I'll premix. That said, if I were going to run the injector pump, I'd buy a brand new one or none at all. Just my view and not an argument. Good luck

Thank you gentlemen I appreciate the info! And any idea if running a full tank in one session is too much for the engine or should I do it in increments?

You want to heat cycle it. Run for 15 minutes then cool for 30 minutes and repeat. First 1/2 tank no more than 1/3 throttle vary it the entire time. Next 1/2 than 1/2 throttle. Next 1/2 of second tank 3/4 throttle. Last 1/2 of second tank full throttle but never hold it there.

Ok sounds great! Thank you for the info. Was going to go today but these 25 mph winds are holding me back until Saturday:/

I love reading all the experienced advice. I'm breaking in two engines this weekend and I'd like them to live a long reliable lifetime. :D :D I think I"m gonna play mechanic and call it a test and tune weekend. The girls rented a camp on the water and I'm sure they'll be riding a lot. :) Might be difficult getting them to go slow. :D :D

Oil is muy important! However, besides normal wear (see compression checking), check your tune carefully. Running a 2-stroke lean of fuel for example is most often responsible for killing them. The tiny carb passages corrode imperceptibly over the decades causing a lean condition and the fuel filters load up with junk, the fuel line fittings and fuel tank switch leak air internally, starving the fuel into lean-out causing lean hesitation, imperceptible detonation and overheated (eventually melted) pistons. so that even the best oil cannot survive these conditions.

The Seadoo/Rotax oil injection combined with the correct oil works great as long as it's not neglected. IMO, the problem with ditching the variable ratio is you don't want or need that much oil at low speed and it won't be a good experience.

There's something to be said for the knowledge passed on from old dirt bikers like Gordon Jennings, it's not just about throwing tons of oil at these, far from it, don't fall into that trap. Make sure your tune is correct, lean hesitation is your big warning.
