Hello, I have a 98 Sportster with the twin 720's and want to make sure the oil pumps are ok. I am currently taking them off but do not know what to look for as to what is normal and not? This will be my third season with the boat and I don't know if the oil pumps were ever serviced and I do not want one to go bad and lose an engine. I also do not want to do the oil pump delete which makes the boat smoke all the time. Any tips of what to look for? I thought about just replacing them with new ones til I saw the 200$+ price for each pump.

There is nothing to service on the oil pump and they sre very reliable. only service is to change the oil filter and check that the oil lines are not getting cracked and brittle. I would not remove them as there is nothing to service. Make sure the allignment marks are adjusted correctly.

There is a bench test for the pump in the service manual to test oil volume at a given rpm using a drill, but I really don't think that is necessary. About the only failures I have heard of is oil line falling off or breaking, plastic pump drive shaft breaking, or cavitation due to air intrusion into feed line after service or flipping over on a PWC.

I would be far more concerned about keeping the fuel system in good shape, like rebuilding the carbs and checking the small internal fuel filter inside the carbs. Most engine failures are due to running lean from lack of fuel due to some restriction in the fuel system. If the engine is not running good at all RPM, go to the fuel system before engine damage occurs.
