Oil Pump and Balance Shaft Oil Question

The boat is a '99 Challenger 1800 with two 787 engines. I'm just about ready to start her up after a full rebuild of almost all the systems and have two questions:

1 - I replaced one engine and rebuilt the top end of the other. I removed the oil pump and plastic drive from the replaced engine, but is there a way to remove the plastic drive from the other engine with it installed? I don't think I can slide the plastic drive out the opening. I don't want to remove the whole cover, but that might be the only way.
Anyone leave it in there and just put the cover on? (Doesn't seem like a good idea) How about leaving the pump there disconnected? Will the pump overheat w/o a flow of oil?

2 - How much oil do you put in the balance shaft case? I looked in the manual, but can't find anything. One picture shows 1oz of oil, but I'm not sure it's pointing to the case (page 04-06-2). Also, what oil to you use?

Thanks! Hope to have her running again soon!

One ounce!....

Yes, it's one ounce of oil. The oil is only there for spashing up onto the cogs of the gears to provide lubrication from heat and friction. To much oil and you increase the friction from oil drag on the gears.....

Thanks Snipe!

Thank you for the answer. I put the premix 2 cycle oil in there since it's the same stuff that's in the case.

As for the oil pump drive, the answer is no. There is no way to get the plastic drive out without pulling the cover. Maybe it's helpful to someone else in the future.
