oil and smoke coming from stator housing

So I just had a new stator put on because it did this before now I'm right back where I started. obviously something is blowing out of the engine is there a seal back there? or is this engine seen it's last day? I'm about to take the housing off and try to take a look but here's a pic. Lemme know what u think...

You can see where it blew out that hole and on to the gas tank. Btw it's a 96 xp.

ok. nevermind the pic is not gonna work but yea it's blowing stuff right outta the hole that that wire harness goes into.

I've been looking at the parts catalogue. Is it possible it's just the oil seal on the front of the engine? is it like the crank seal on a car motor? Is it worth tryin to just replace that seal, or is taht even possible?

If I do have to do a rebuild...Is it something I can do? I've pulled engines and transaxles on cars, but never actually gotten into the internals of an engine. Will I need special tools?
