Nose bumper repair

On my 96 GTI, the white 'plugs' in the bumper pulled out. I have drilled out the rivets and pushed the white holding plugs back into the bumper. It doesn't seem like this is sufficient to hold the bumper on. When new, are they heated in place or glued in place? I just don't see how they will stay in.

I have the same ski and my bumper plugs are black like the bumper color as well as the rub rails.

How did your bumper plugs pull out? Seems a little bit impossible.

A 3/16" pop rivet would re-secure it.

The black plug that covers the rivet head was in tact. The rivets go through a white bushing (which I called a white plug, probably incorrect terminology), then into the fiber glass. The white busing has to be solid in the bumper. Two of them pulled out of the bumper, but rivets were still solid, with the white bushing tight against fiber glass. Black bumper was detached. I'm not positive exactly when this happened, but I think the bottom edge of the nose caught on the winch stand.

I hope this makes more sense. We put the white bushings back in the bumper. We had to press them in. I just don't know if they'll hold, once they've been pulled out.

I better understand what you are talking about now.

I'm not exactly sure on how those white bushings are secured in there. But I would imagine they are pressed in during assembly.

Maybe try some Gorilla Glue to hold it in place...

Thanks. We did put a bit of epoxy in there. They didn't go in easily. We pressed them in with help of bench vise, so maybe it will be ok. I thought they might be set with heat when originally manufactured. This year ski season is over for us. We won't get to test our fix until next year.

From what I remember the hard plastic insert is molded into the bumper so it can't be reinstalled if it pulled out. Just replace the bumper.
