Well guys, I think I might be crossing over to the dark side.

...

I want to buy a stand up ski.

Something fun, cheap, and beginner like. I am old after all....

Any suggestions? I know nothing about stand ups.

I just rode a Kawi? 650, ran into a guy at the ramp and started talking to him, we swapped rides and needless to say it was an experience!

Try before you buy...I am interested in what you find out. My first ride almost wore me out and I was only up for about 30 seconds!

Given that you said you're "old" I don't know if a stand-up ski is a good idea. I've seen a lot of people fly off of those things and also face plant into the handlebars.

I'm the only one in my group with a Sea-Doo. Everyone else rides Yamaha Super-Jets. If I was to get one, that is what I would get.

For a first time you want to go cheap in case you don't like it and there is only one ski that is somewhat stable, has enough power to get you out of the water and is No. 1 cheap. Kawasaki 650 SX, they made them from 1987 to 1992 and the best ones to find are the 1991-1992 because they got a bigger carb and rear exhaust but any will do. They are almost bulletproof and easy to find.

mega-ditto's !!! Go SJ or go home.

however, with that said, I have no issues if somebody wants to start with a beginner model, like a cheap JS550, see if they like the experience, then upgrade, but if your going to be a standup owner, SJ is the way to go.

I agree with the Super Jet but here in California people think they are gold. A 1991 SJ 650 will bring $2000 in crap condition and you can not touch any year Round nose for less than $4000 as long as it runs.
A stock JS 550 just does not have enough power to get most adults out of a turn in my opinion so that leaves a 650SX or 750SX if you want a little bigger ski.

The only standups still made new that I know of are the HSR-Benelli BS3, Kawasaki 800 SX-R and the Super Jet. But they are expensive new.

SJ's are gold here on the east coast as well. Just have to jump on the deals. My one friend drove 6 hours to get one that was mint and got one heck of a deal on it. But the deals don't come up often.

I do agree with everyone else. If your new to it get something cheap.

Just rode a 2004 Kawi sxr 800 with a Factory dry pipe on it that I was fixing for a guy.

A blast, fast and easier to ride than my cousins 650sx (stock)
I was seriously considering looking for one myself.
I think it would be so much fun when you really master how to ride them.
For a beginner it's a bit of a learning curve

Everyone lovessssss super jets around here. They go for gold. But they also hold their value like none other. On a side note. I just picked up a Kawsaki X2 with a 650 in it for 300 running. They can be had super cheap and are a really nice hybrid between stand up and sit down. You can ride it on your knees or standing if you want and the steering is fixed so its easier to get used to. I have a buddy who ride stand ups a lot and he really likes it too. Its slower, cheap, and easy to learn. I would suggest keeping that as a possibility even because its a good leway between sit downs and stand ups and they can be found super cheap. And this way you can decide if you really like.

They still make the superjets new, the rumor is they over produced them this year and are discounting them heavily. Here in MN where jet skis are usually the most expensive in the country a couple dealers are advertising them for $6500. MSRP is 8800 I think. Unfortunate for the guys that bought 2013s for full price. I have thought about buying a couple to sell them next spring but I'm sure tax and dealer's fees would eat up most of the profit.

I agree with what others have said about try to get some seat time on one or buy cheap. It's not for everybody. I have an 87 Kawasaki JS 550 that I traded my friend a bottle of whiskey for. My friend bought a 90 square nose SJ for $1,500 last year. Any SJ around here that comes up for sale for less than 2k disappears pretty quick. They're a lot of fun but not something I would go cruise on all day. I'm going to make a 3rd set of bunks on the front of my jet ski trailer so I'll have it with me at the lake if I want to rip it for an hour or two.

Unfortunately here on the Left Coast even the dealers want an arm and a leg for them and do not budge off MSRP. $6500 would be great for a new one especially when guys want that for a 2008.
As far a rumors, it is said there will be a new SuperJet for 2015 as it is the 25th anniversary.

We still see people ask $6500 for an '08! HA!

I keep thinking one of these years they will convert the SJ to a 4 stroke, then we'll really see the prices of used one's go up.

Have you seen the prices of 4-stroke standup's? Take a look at the Benelli. Makes the 2-strokes look like a steal.

The problem is that here in the west there are more and more waterways closed to 2 strokes like Lake Mead. Oh WAIT! I shouldn't say 2-strokes because it is just PWC's and not bass boats or outboard motors because those 2-strokes don't pollute, just the PWC's. Idiots!
