I have a 2000 gti. it has been running great, but suddenly would not go above 40mph, which it hits at about 2/3 throttle. above that it will not continue to accelerate, and makes a whooshing sound like there is air in the intake. this happened once before, and there was a bag stuck in the intake, but i have checked and there is nothing in there. Changed plugs, checked fuel filter, checked compression, starts immediately, even on one cylinder. Was kind of low on oil, but not completely empty, maybe 1" level--filled half way but still no improvement. Impeller is original, but the change was so sudden, i don't think that is the problem. Thanks for any ideas and help.

rectifier? Electrical noise from diode failure is cause. You are probly hearing cylinder waveform distortion. replace rectifier. Bills86e

thanks for the quick reply, bill. I did forget to mention that i found the box top with the spark plug wires had come loose. apologize if sounding ignorant, but is that where the rectifier is? how much does it cost to buy one and is it easy to install myself? if not in the box with the spark plug wires, where is it? can i see it on one of the microfiche parts sites?
thanks again, bill. Andy

Whooshing sound

Is the jet pump O.K.? Is the wear ring good. Is the reverse gate at the rear going all the way up when you take it out of reverse?
