no cranking out of the blue

Check the wires from the battery and The ground wire going to the starter area. It might be a loose connection or bad wire end. It sounds like it isn't getting power. Be sure the battery is good and is fully charged. It too could be a bad battery and doesn't have enough amps to turn the starter. You could try swapping the batteries too. You could get the battery checked at like Auto Zone for free. The last thing it could be is a bad starter or corroded Bendix on the end of the starter. If it is the starter you need to pull it to check it.

are you sure it is starter clicking?
i went through hell this summer with the clicks - check my only other posts
take the seat off and put your head in there to make sure the click is coming from the starter - just a thought
after reading most every post - a multimeter and a good ear and the willingness to ask for help will fix almost any problem

only one motor and starter work
one engine and the starter run fine the second engine will not crank when I push the start button all I get is one click of a relay for each push of the button and starter does not seem to get the signal to crank I spent quite a few hours in the cold bent right over in a painfull position removing the exhaust and then the starter. I then took the starter and hooked up direct to a battery in the garage and it cranks every time it is connected so them I put my boat back together while crushing my ribs at the same time and still the same one click with each push of the start button while the second engine and starter work fine and so did this one six weeks ago when we pulled the boat out of the water so I hope its just a relay or fuse not sending the signal to the starter to crank thanks folks for your help and I did love my 1998 Sportster 1800 in the summer months when every thing worked good but I only want to start both motors to get the water out for storage

this sounds like a silly question but can you turn the motor over by hand?
tried taking the plugs out and cranking the motor??.
yank out the volt meter, and test for voltage between the postive and ground of the starter? have someone tap the starter. see 9-12V.
also tap the starter while watching battery voltage does it drop 3-4v?

ok i think you need some help.
get someone to push the starter switch while you feel for the click.
put your hands on the motor, can you feel the click/thunk??
if so pull the pto flywheel cover off pull the plugs and turn it over by hand using the fly wheel. if it turns try cranking with out your plugs in
if you can't feel the clunk of the starter follow, the red wire back to the electrical box chances are the click you're hearing is the starter selenoid at the end of the red wire. if thats your click, re read what everyone else has said.
Double check your grounds and your battery connections. If you can't find a problem, i THINK you can swap the solenoid from the running motor's box. if it cranks starts great finish your winterizing and order a new solenoid

If the engine turns over by hand with the spark plugs out by turning the shaft at the pto end counter clockwise, then open the MPEM box and just jump across the solenoid. If it turns over now it is the solenoid. You don't need to swap it to the other engine to find out if it is bad. Do all the other checks first. Be sure the engine does turn over by hand as it could be seized up.

bigG...like what hardtarge mentioned..follow the red wire, it'll lead to the ebox thats IN FRONT of the mag cover for each motor, there, you'll find your relay...:cheers:
