I just picked up a 1997 GS from a neighbor. It has been sitting for about 5 years. I picked up a new battery and spark plugs, pumped out all of the old gas. When I put the key in place, i get nothing, no beeps no lights. There is power to the solenoid. The fuses seem to be good. I was told that since it sat for so long with the battery disconected that the key may need to be re-programmed. Before I bring it to the dealer for that, is there any other possibilities.

Free skis are always good.

Yes, it could have lost it's memory, but it would still give you one long beep... saying it can't read the lanyard.

Unfortunately, there isn't an easy answer with this problem. I would start with opening every plug, and checking for corrosion. Also, make sure that you are getting 12v to the computer, and up to the lanyard post.

did you check the fuses(or corrosion) in the rear elec box? follow the red/purple wire for 12v to the MPEM.
very unlikely that the DESS needs reprogrammed, seen them sit for 10 years without a battery and then work fine. you should get a single long beep if an unrecognized lanyard is attached.

Thank you both very much. Pulled all of the connectors, followed all of the wires and found a bad ground. First day on the forum and you guys saved me a trip to the dealer. Much appreciated.

One more thing, tracing the wires led to finding 2 bad motor mounts. Now I can do them before my first trip up the block to the bay. Thanks again.
