hey new to the forum and seadooing from Toronto Ontario Canada .

on wednesday I bought my first one , its a 2001 seadoo xp with the 951cc engine i got it for $2700 with the trailer and ownerships .

it seems to be in great shape and when i bought it the previous owner told me the vts wasn't working so i have ordered an new motor for it it was pretty easy to troubleshoot . i also changed the spark plugs, drained and put in new gas (not sure how old the gas was), and charged up the battery.

today was my first real day out i just brought it out to lake ontario right by my house to test everything out and it all seemed to go great until went to give it full throtle . when i did that it just died on me . it starts right back up and runs for a bit but then it dies, i am able to listen to the engine and give it more gas just before it cuts out to keep it going . not sure what that could be . i am new to small engines i have rebiult a 351 small block, a staright 6 from a jeep tj and a 3.8l v-6 from a jeep jk so i am not exactly new to engines.

looking forward to really letting this thing rip, from what i gather this model really can fly

Congrats on the new toy! I have a 2000 and they are a lot of fun.

The first thing you need to do before running at all is to completely go through the fuel system. You will need to rebuild both carbs with genuine Mikuni kits (do not use aftermarket), replace all gray tempo fuel lines, Clean/replace fuel selector valve, and clean/replace the filter and water separator.

Ethanol deteriorates those gray fuel lines and a green goo will clog everything including the internal carb filters. This causes a lean condition and will grenades your engine.

I'd also do a compression check on the engine to make sure everything is good there as well.

hey thanks for the quick reply I have done some research and will be ordering a rebiuld kit for the carbs and buying new fuel lines.

good news is i replaced all the fuel lines bad news..

looks like it was sitting for a while and it rusted. is this still usable?

this is from the cylindar that has shitty compression .around 90psi

Just be glad you caught that now! Looks bad but definitely salvageable. Buy some genuine Mikuni kits with the Viton needle/seat. I'd also recommend the kit with all new internal screws seeing how badly yours are rusted.

I get mine here as they sell kits with everything including new hex head bolts to replace the standard screws.

The problem is a carb rebuild wont fix the compression issue. Were you able to water test it before you bought it?

Ah my bad I missed that last sentence on compression. Yeah carb rebuild definitely won't fix that. Time for a rebuild...

ahh i was hoping it might help .

yes i had it on the water on saturday and it actually seemed to be idleing pretty good and accelerating pretty good but once i got out on the water i really opened the throttle up and at full throttle it just died ,after that it would start up fine but it kept dieing on me every so often on the way back . i fifugred fuel lines and carb rebuild were a good place to start.

so the only way to fix the compression is to rebiuld the top end?

i was hoping i could get away with it the way it was till the end of the season and rebiuld over the winter but maybe not

Yeah 90 psi is low. What was the reading on the other cyl? Did you have the throttle completely open when you tested?

Most guys will suggest a complete rebuild, not just a top end especially if you plan on keeping the ski. Crank is 15 years old so who knows how long you would get out of just a top end. The 951 is notorious for blowing out the cases when the crank does let go.

the other cyl was 125psi .its still low but not as bad . unfortunetly i didnt do my homework before i bought the ski. i did get a good deal but i shouldve known! lol but now im along for the ride either way, cant look back now.

im going to have to look into what is involved in a rebuild. i would like to do it myself cus you know ... half the fun is building it

The ski looks to be in excellent condition. That muck in the carb looks like water has been sitting in there for a while. So if the engine was flooded at one time and water wasn't removed properly the crank bearings may be on their way out.

Pull the head and see what to pistons look like. Rebuild carbs, replace lines, fuel filter, water separator filter and you have a great ski for years to come.

so its been a while since i posted so here we go i ordered the carb rebiuld kits and cleaned the crap out of them and now they are all assembled and read to go . i also went through and replaced all of the original gray fuel lines when i did that this is what i found

20150806_193541.jpg

the fuel selector switch was competly bypassed im not sure why cus i tested it out and it seems to work fine

and this is how they plugged a fuel line they didnt use. what type of work is that? lol anywasy i fixed it! its all good now with new fuel lines

and now to adress the low compression i am having. am i safe to asume that the low compression is caused by my carbs being all rusted?

either way i opened her up and took a look at the cylindars :

im not sure what to think about them so any real input would be great i would like to have it working by next week
