Bought a pair of sister 1996 XP's (pics below) a couple of months ago and will probably have a few questions before long. I'm not new to boating, just to PWC's. My family bought our first boat when I was 11 and I've been hooked on the lake environment ever since. I bought my first boat over 20 years ago and a second several years later and have always done all the maintenance and mods myself. That was easy, since I've always been a gearhead, wrenching all of my own cars as well. But since I sold my last project ( 27" Chappy, supercharged 496) 4 years ago, we've been boatless and thus haven't been to the lake since... till we bought the twins 2 months ago. Now with the ski's, and their Rotax engines, it's a whole different monster. I've never poked around much with 2 stroke anyway, and these Rotax I'm finding out, aren't your average 2 stroke engines either. So I'm likely going to be asking a few questions of you PWC, 2 stroke guys.
Although these ski's looked to be in outstanding condition at first glance, they both have turned out to have quite a laundry list of little "fix-it" items to address. At first, we just needed to get them running ... reliably anyway, as we planned on taking them with us on a week long lake trip around Labor Day. Now that we're back, I'll be concentrating on all the other stuff, some of which probably should have been done before we left. First up is swapping out all of the original factory fuel lines and filters and rebuilding the carbs. Found out (mid-way through the trip) that the dreaded green goo had infiltrated one of the skis, so figured I'd do both at the same time. If anyone has any pointers or things to watch for, by all means chime in.
Thanks, and it's good to be back on the water!!
