New to me pair of 96 Seadoo XP's

Just picked these up and the trailer for a great deal. They have been sitting for years. So my question is, where do I start? Im new to the two stroke scene (I have a 2019 Seadoo GTR).

Should I just apop a battery in add fresh fuel and oil to the engine and she if they start up? Should i run a compression test first?

I plan on buffing them out and removing the stickers as I want to wrap these guys, but im not sure what I should start on first. Any suggestions?

Compression check it to see if the engines need a rebuild or not, or will need it sooner or later. Remove carbs, clean rebuild with OEM kits, new fuel and oil lines, new oring in fuel strainer, new fuel selector isn't a bad idea while you're at it. Flush the jet pumps.

That'd be a start, I wouldn't just add oil and fuel and hit the lake, not if they've been sitting for years. The last thing you want is to lean an engine out or sink it.
 
Thanks! I'm not gonna put them in the water as it is snowing right now! Our season is over here in Nevada, its getting pretty cold, so I'm winterizing the GTR for next year as we speak.

Just didn't know how to go about getting the 96 Xp's in running order. The P.O. said they have been sitting a while and they look pretty clean on the inside. So I will take your advice and do a compression check first.

Would I need fresh oil for the compression test? Honestly I don't know how long they have been sitting and If there is even oil in the motor at this point.

Definitly going to take the carbs out and rebuild them as well.
 
Quite honestly these are my first two stroke motors. They have been sitting for years. I dont know if the oil is good or not? thats why I asked
 
They look nice. I really like this model ski. I can't see them working if they've been sitting for a long time. Then again, you may have good luck. I wouldn't put them in the water till I pulled the carbs and probably do a rebuild. Old fuel in the tank, I'd pull and drain the tank and pull and clean the oil tank. Compression test is a must. Good Luck !

Research the difference between a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke. But in short the oil tank supplies injection oil to mix with the gas and oil to the rotary shaft gear.

Make sure it has the red full synthetic 2 stroke oil, if not drain everything and refill with the proper API TC rated oil.

Holds the injection oil and oil to the rotary valve gearing in the engine. If no one has ever cleaned the tank and lines they can get pretty funky. I clean all that as a matter of fact. I don't want surprises after I did a lot of work on the ski only to have it all UNDONE by dirty fuel our oil systems. That's just me. :) I find too much wrong on these skis when I buy them to trust anything. Whether they run or not... they all get the same treatment. :)

So I wouldnt have to pre mix my gas then?
 
Make sure to clean out the water separator. You'll find it under the steering bars if you remove the front storage box. It unscrews. Clean it out and use a little grease on the o-ring to reinstall. I'd also add a good quality in-line fuel filter (not a paper filter). You should pull out and clean the rave valves. They get all gunked up and stop moving freely, leading to performance issues. You'd probably do good to get new bellows and O-rings for them. Also get new plugs (NGK). When ordering carb rebuild kits, make sure you go with genune Mikuni parts. Don't cheap out and get aftermarket, they can often lead to performance issues.

Congrats on the skis. These are (in my humble opinion) the most fun skis ever made. I plan to always have one in my fleet of toys.
