Hi all,

I am living in Indonesia and am currently trying to repair a Seadoo GTX260 LE that has had some serious issues. For starters it dragged a rope into the pump shaft and totally destroyed the bellows seal and pump impeller liner, this then led to the unit filling with water and subsequently getting semi submerged. Mmmmmm
Add to these dilemmas is the fact that there are very limited "experts" with these machines here and limited spare parts also. Hence the reason I have been searching the internet for advice. This appears to be the most helpful and knowledgeable forum I can find.
So far I have rebuilt the pump unit including new shaft, seals, bearings etc. All good. I also have the engine running again after replacing some corroded fuses, relay, throttle sense and a few damaged wires that same nameless idiot had removed some insulation from at some stage.
Anyway, my current problem is that the engine rapidly overheats as soon as started. I am about to start checking water pump (recirc pump) and thermostat as well as the sensors on exhaust and engine temp.

Any suggestions where I should look greatly appreciated.

Are you sure its actually overheating? Does the engine feel hot to the touch, or is it a defective sensor telling you its too hot. How long does it run before overheating? Does it use a radiator or some sort of heat exchanger to cool the coolant? Is the thermostat stuck closed? Defective cooling fan/relay?
 
Good question. Engine is hot, but not to thr the extent I would expect given the temp readout. 135f. Also a lot of water vapor in exhaust. Engine starts normally, but then ryns rough as temp increases. Engine fault light comes on either solid or sometimes blinking. Goes into limp home mode.
 
You need to put it in the water to keep the engine temperature right. The ride plate is under the jet pump at the rear of the craft, it acts as your radiator, the coolant flows through it and when the sea doo is in the water, the water keeps the ride plate cool. On the trailer there is nothing to keep the engine from overheating.
 
I am going to check thermostat next. It uses a heat exchanger and closed loop engine coolant system with recirc water pump.
 
Thanks for that. I suspected that may be the case. I will need to reassemble the jetski first to do that as I have the entire top assy removed so I can fully access the engine due to the other damage.
 
What i do know is that these should not be run out of the water for more than a minute even with a water hose connected to them. Perhaps someone can explain a little better why this is?
 
Today I will ring the tech guys at Seadoo in Oztraylia and get some info from them also. I will post anything interesting.
 
Ok I think I get it Tom. The ride plate is actually the intercooler for the engine. Water from the engine recirc pump is pumped through the ride plate and cooled by the lake/sea water. So yes you are dead right, without the craft in the water the temp will rapidly rise. When run on the trailer water is only directed through the exhaust cooling jacket from what I can see.
Another problem I have come across today. Engine rpm quickly rises to about 3500rpm without touching the throttle and the engine warning light is on. I have replaced the throttle sense unit on the handle bars and serviced the throttle body. With the intake pipe disconnected from the throttle body there is no visible movement of the butterfly. It appears to be resting against the stop position. Spray pattern from injectors appears normal from clips I have seen on You Tube etc.

Any ideas anyone? Cheers, Mick
 
Thanks Tom< I have checked the throttle body and gasket, all good. Will dig a bit deeper around the inlet manifold area. What is the normal idle rpm at start up?
