This is my first Jet Ski. 1997 GTI. I will post up pics soon. Very nice site you all have here and I look forward to getting to know you. Looks like there is a ton of information here. I bought my ski about 3 days ago. Long story short...the guy wanted 1,900.00 with trailer and cover. I went and test rode it..and it would just free spin from a stand still, but half throttle for a few, then open it up it was fine. So I called a friend and he told me the most likely cause was a worn wear ring. So I offered up 1,400.00 with the trailer and cover...brought it home and cleaned it up real good and now tomorrow it goes to the dealer to get the ring installed.....I learned a few things buying my first ski. Because the Add say 1998 Ski does not mean thats what it is. I got to excited when I purchased it, and learned when I got home its a 97. I live in Bradenton FL. Thanks again for having me.

I think I made my first noobie mistake on my ski. Got it home from the dealer, and decided to start it up at the house before I take it out for the first time. I hooked the water hose up, and turned the water on, before I started the ski. It only clicked would not turn over. So I thought the battery was dead. I checked the cabled and connections. Then put a jump box on it...still would turnd very slow....long story short...turned water off, let battery charge over night....seems like every time it turns over it spits a bunch of water out, and turns more freeley....Am I not supposed to turn the water on first? This morning with almost all of the water out of it...it was cranking right over.

Rampage,
Hi and welcome and congrats on the new ski!

You never want to turn the water on first. Because that can force water into your engine.

Always use this order
Start ski
turn water on
turn water off
turn ski off

And it is a good idea to have a ball type cutoff valve on the water hose close to the ski so you can turn it off quickly if it should die.

Also don't run your ski for more than about 20 seconds without water or 5 min on the hose.

Ask lots of questions here and don't be afraid to use the search function. You will learn and amazing amount of stuff if you try.

Also you will want to download copies of your operators guide and also a service manual for your ski. They will come in really handy.

How does it run since you got it back from the shop? You probably want to get it started up so it can blow any remaining water out.

I hope when I get home I can get it started. Do you think there is water in the cylanders? If I get it running when I get home I will take it out tonight.

WElcome!

id think so pull the plugs crank it couple times (to get the water out) then replace and try it again

Got it started, after I got all the water out. Thanks for the advice. After the dealer put the new wear ring in, and I took it out it had the same problem...It would just cavitate but not really move. So I took it back in, and now they tell me that I need to have the pump rebuilt. They said when they checked it the first time the bearing seemed good. They said they would take care of all the labor if I just paid for the parts. Seems fair to me. I just hope it works this time.
