New Owner looking for some guidance

Help! I just bought two used 01 GTX DI's. Hindsight says I should have had them serviced before trying to use them. Previous owner says they have not been used regularly in a couple of years. Both have less than 100 hours on them. One is running just fine after putting it in the water last week. The other needed a new battery. It went in the water on Friday and ran for several hours before the engine overheat warning came on and shut it down. We left it alone for the rest of the day. Saturday it fired up (had to give it some throttle) and was baby'ed for about 15-20 minutes. After that, it stopped running at idle and would not start again. My guess is that I need to do some routine maintenance. What I am looking for is some advice from this group on the various items I need to include on the maintenance check list. Thanks in advance for the help!

What colour are the fuel lines?

IF they are grey you should probably change them out and clean out the fuel selector switch as well.

Since you unit doesn't have carbs, there have been issues as well with the injectors, but start with the lower cost items first.

Rough turning to the right under power

Great! I will add this to my to do list. I am also going to flush the cooling system and a few other maintenance items listed in the owners manual. I will note my progress when I can get to it later this week. I also have one other item that I am not sure how to handle. This same ski is difficult to turn hard to the right under power. You can force your way thru the turn but it seems to catch, hold, then release as you apply increased pressure when turning. The other ski turns quite smoothly and this ski does as well to the left. I am thinking that there is a lube point that needs addressed. I was looking thru the shop manual that I downloaded and can not find any reference to a lube point. Any thoughts out there?

Some progress, but not enough

The fuel lines had already been changed from the gray ones. I went ahead and changed the plugs. After that it fired up and ran well for a good 40 minutes before it started to die at idle, and after a few re-starts it refused to start again at all began to beep and display MAINT on the display. I let it sit and rode the other ski. A day later I pulled the in-line fuel filter and cleaned it. I then fired it up and it ran well for an hour or so and then the same symptoms (after running for a while it will die at idle, then after a few restarts it will not start at all unless it sits for an extended period of time. The MAINT on the display will appear. Before I bail and take it to the Dealer, I was looking for some low cost/low hassle suggestions to try next. Injector issues? If so, is there something I can do cheaper/faster than the dealer?
Also, I fixed the steering issue. It was a missing bolt on the drive unit. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey Lemon....
You said the first time it died due to engine over temperature. Since then it dies and only flashes MAINT. Does it seem to be moving enough water through the system. Check the small outlet on the backside under the seat (near the rear ski rope cleat). Is it throwing out as much water as the other one?

This one has me a little stumped due to the very long time between events. It does seem to indicate a heat related issue. Maybe the electrical system is acting up.

pierek,

Unfortunately my day job makes it difficult to move rapidly on this issue. The skis are at a family vacation lake house that I only get to see them on the weekends. Though it has been a long time between posts, the only changes to the ski have been the plugs and fuel filter clean. These changes have seemed to eliminated the overheat warning but not the MAINT warning. I have checked the water flow out the back and believe that when the ski is runnining I am getting the same flow that I see in the working ski.

DI compressor and overheating...

The cooling system for the 951cc DI motors is quite extensive and very important to the efficient operation of your ski. What makes it so much more different is the cooling system for the lower jacket and magneto area. You also have cooling lines for your compressor which is detrimental for the proper operation of your fuel injection system.

If this system is not working right, the problems your seeing now will only compound and get worse if you can't fix it.

I think I'd do a pressure test on the cooling water system and also, one on the compressor itself.

In the forum, the DI models are the most widely problematic engines that BRP used in the Seadoo's........the manual has all the air tests for the fuel, compressor and cooling system. I suggest you do them to find out where your problem is, starting with the cooling system, since you already had the overheat alarm..........

It seems as though seadoosnipe has a lot of experience and you should heed his suggestions. I am not familiar with the DI motors but it sounds like your initial overheat warning is the smoking gun here. Especially after reading what seadoosnipe had to say.

The long time between events was directed at the 40 minutes to 1 hour of ride time before it dies. Not the time between posts.

Good luck and let us know what you find.
