New oil pump leaking

I just had my oil injector pump replaced a few weeks ago because of the nipple coming out of the original. After cleaning the oil out of my hull, I noticed more oil after a ride the other day. Thinking I had not left enough room for expansion when I topped the tank off after the previous ride and it leaked out the check valve at the tank. I sopped up the oil in the hull. Before the next ride, I peaked in the hull to make sure no oil had leaked. It had not. When I returned from the ride, I checked again and there was some oil right around the syphoners. Not a lot, just a little. I inspected the hose feeding the pump and it seemed to have loose oil on it. The tech that installed it used a factory type oetiker clamp and the connection looks good.

Where could this oil be coming from and is this something I should worry about?

if the hose was old... the Okeeter clamp could have split the hose when he compressed it. I would take it off, cut the hose back a little, and put on a regular clamp. also... just for giggles... make sure the screws in the top plate are tight.

I believe they replaced the oil injection lines during the rebuild. They look brand new, so I took a look at the bill and sure enough, the 12mm hose was listed. I'll check the screws. Are you referring to the two Allen screws that secure the pump to the motor?

Nope... if you look at the pump... there is a cover at one end. As I recall... on the 800, it is also the cable bracket. There should be 2 screws in the cover, Make sure they are tight. If the cover is loose, it will leak bast the gasket.

I got a chance to check this out this morning and inspect the oil system pretty well. The top plate/cable bracket was tight and not leaking. Inspected around the pump housing, not leaking there. There is a small leak right where the hose attaches to the oil pump. It looks like it is seeping out of the end of the hose. Clamp looks secure. I am not sure why/how it is getting by, but I don't think that is the source of the oil I have been finding in my hull. I followed the line down to the engine under the carbs. I assume this is where it attaches to lube the RV?? There is definitely a leak here and it is dripping. I can't tell by feel if it is coming out of the nipple where the hose is attached or if it is leaking where the nipple mounts to the motor. But, I believe it is coming from the 90* nipple on the engine. According to the Service manual, A sealant version of loctite is suppose to be applied to this when inserting. I bet this either got broken loose during the rebuild and/or not sealed back properly.

If I get in there to fix, do I have to bleed this line some how or is this just gravity feed to the crank case? Also, What should the torque be on that nipple? I can't find that in the SM.

I guess I should not run the engine until this is fixed, correct?

Yep... the 90 degree fitting is feeding the RV... and it's a bastard to get to. It's very likely that the fitting got damaged, since the factory fittings are very thin aluminum. I've seen then break if they get over tightened. Knowing that... don't just try to tighten the fitting. Remove it, clean the threads, put new sealant on it... and put it back in. (Check it carefully for a crack) I use the paste fuel system fitting sealant. You shouldn't use Teflon tape... because if some gets into the system... it could cause an issue. Yes... most likely it would just end up in the filter... but if it got past the filter... or got lodged into the crank seals... it would be a pain to fix later.

No... the RV oil doesn't have to be bled. As soon as you pour in the oil... it will fill from the carb side... and the air will come out the other side. Also... you don't have to drain the oil. Just clamp the hoses, and you can remove them. There will still be a mess under the engine because of the oil in the RV cavity... but it's easy enough to wipe up later.

The culprit for this leak ended up being aftermarket hose that did not fit 100% snug even when clamped.

Hey Doc, how much oil do you usually add after an oil system service? I noticed a few little air bubbles in the small injector lines after getting these leaks fixed.

If I'm draining the system of unknown oil.... (so it's dry) and refilling it....

When I pour in the first gallon... it will be a little over half full. (close to 2/3rds full) So... a little more than a quart is needed to fill the RV, hoses, and injector pump.

I'm sorry, my bad, I didn't ask this correctly. What I was meaning to ask is how much oil you add to the first tank of fuel in the fuel tank.
