We just put a new motor in our 2003 sea doo gti le rfi, the motor will start up and sounds normal and can reach full rpms out of water, once we drop it in the water we are limited to about 4000 rpms and sounds like it is hitting the rev limited at 4000 rpms. There was a maintenance required light at first but we think we have cleared that and it hasnt came back. The dealer told us that the jet ski doesnt usually lock in limp mode, which doesnt make sense to me.

Any thoughts or ideas would be helpful.

Running out of the water tells you nothing.

Why did the old engine fail?
Did you replace the fuel filters?
Did you have the injectors serviced?
Did you reset the TPS?

Bought it with blown up engine, for a really good price, didnt replace fuel filters. We did put new gas in, how do you reset TPS?

Though my skis are carbed, my extensive experience with tweaking high boost fuel injected turbo cars, fuel pressure to the injectors is directly related to tuning out a lean or rich condition. It's doing one or the other, I doubt the fuel pressure is too high causing the breakup at 4K. It's likely leaning out from lack of enough fuel pressure at higher fuel demands. I'd ck the fuel filters and make sure they're clear or replace them. Then check fuel pressure. Then ck or reset the TPS. Then have the injectors cleaned and calibrated.

This is the reason the RFI and DI skis can be had for a really good price, and with a blown engine a 'really' good price. There's much more to it than swapping another motor in.

The in tank filters get really really nasty. I would change them out before going further.
