I own a 1998 XP Limited that has run flawless from 97 to present. Its a freshwater ski that got alot of hours clocked on her when I was younger and recently only sees occasional weekend recreational use for me and my twin 6 year old boys.
The problem that has just shown its hand is a top speed bog or loss of power in a surging manner. The ski was winterized properly and never had the trouble last season. It has fresh gas and I have checked and cleaned the fuel filter. The water spout is spraying water out the driver side front hull and I have monitored the oil consumption. The first 10 - 15 minutes of riding are fine, no signs of any problems. There after she wont pull past 45 mph and surges at full throttle. She is fine at part throttle or just cruising at 40 mph.
I will also say that I did find a mouse nest inside the engine compartment which I vacuumed up. I have double and triple checked all houses and wires for chew marks. The issue that baffles me is that it runs fine for when its cold.
Any suggestions would be great and much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Wes

I hope someone can shed somelight onto this problem as I have the EXACT same issue with my 97 SPX...

Runs fine when cold and then surges at full trottle when warmed up. Also runs fine a 3/4 trottle. Local dealers are clueless?

You could start by checking the fuel selector valve. This should feel similar to the effect of running out of gas. If the valve is clogged up with junk, then you could be experiencing a fuel starvation condition - when it "breaks loose", then it is an overpressure that results in erratic fueling to the carbs.

Along that train of thought, fuel filters INSIDE the carbs could be contributing to the problem. http://seadooforum.com/showthread.php?t=3495

This would best be addressed with a carb rebuild (or at least internal filters being cleaned) and replacing the original grey fuel hoses with fuel injection black hose.

Well I just pulled the carbs and tore them apart. One of the filters was COMPLETLY clogged...and I still have the grey fuel lines. None of the gaskets were torn, but I think I will replace them anyways..they are 11 years old, plus new fuel line.

Thanks

PS does anymake a rebiuld kit? And how do I know if I have a 787 or 717 carb?

XP = 787 (800). And carb kits are available for $35-$50 for each carb. so get two kits.

By the way, glad that you found something definitive. Not good they were clogged. But now you know, right? :)

98 xp limited = 947 engine You may allso want to clean rave valves if you have not. They need to be cleaned and insected as they can rob from performance.

Thanks for the tips guys. Unfortunately, my ski gets stored on the water about 3.5 hours from my house, so I wont even have a chance to mess with it until next weekend at the earliest. Do you think that I should get a carb rebuild kit from the get go or atleast new gaskets? Also, I have never had to mess with this ski what so ever. How accessible are the Carbs and Rave valves. How does one clean these valves? Sorry for all the questions, just tryin to get all I need in advance.
Thanks,
Wes

A walkthrough here will show how simple pulling the RAVE valves really is. Two allen bolts per valve and there you go. If you are careful, you can reuse the RAVE gaskets. But if they tear or are totally oil soaked, you should replace them.

If you plan on owning this thing for a while, get the carb kits. You'll need them eventually anyway.

Carbs are a little inconvenient to get to. But they are pretty straightforward concerning mounting. Disconnecting fuel hoses and the cable linkages are also required. After that, you just do it on the bench. This is best appreciated with the manuals you can download as a premium member.

If you get lost, come to this forum with pictures for us to help you along.

Installed new gasket kit, replaced fuel lines, cleaned RAVE valves...I just check her out this weekend....She runs like a champ!!!

Thanks for the Help!

Cleaned the RAVE valves and it seems to have done the trick. Im not sure if im crazy but it also seems to be getting better fuel economy.......
Thanks again for all the help.
