I just picked up a used ski that hadn't run for a while - no battery either.

So I replaced all the gray fuel lines with new - cleaned the RAVE valves and cleaned the filters in the carbs.

I set the high speed adjuster to about 1/8th open and the low speed adjusters at 1 1/2 open

After churning it over on the starter for a while it fired and I had fuel spurting out of the return pipe before I reconnected the pipe back to the tank

On the hose the motor runs very unevenly - it will idle at about 1500 rpm and after about 30 secs it revs on it's own to about 4500 rpm - stays there for about 30 seconds and then returns back to 1500 rpm - repeats it for as long as the engine is running.

No water or exhaust gas leaks.

Any thoughts on what adjustments I need to do or where to start looking.

I'll try and get it on the lake as soon as I can to see how it runs there but my other XP that I rebuilt the pipework and carbs on recently runs really well on the hose and on the lake so I think that this one just needs a bit of tuning.

What would you do next?

I would look for air leaks. Check at the base of the carbs., also check the water separator/gas filter, it's located above the gas tank, especially check the O ring.

Sounds like you have the carbs. adjusted properly.

ok, thanks - I'll start looking there.

I checked the fuel separator and cleaned out the filter and checked the O ring and it was fine with no leaks or air bubbles so I'll recheck the carbs. I'll try the ether test first - spraying ether around the carb flanges to check for leaks but if not then I'll pull them off again - what joy!

Not exactly the easiest things to get at on the 947 LOL

Hey Lou,
Getting out today? Yesterday was nice but I didn't get out. My RAVES were getting a bit sticky so I wanted to clean them first, then we got company and I didn't get out. Going out real soon though on the skis, then we'll take the boat out tonight and watch the fireworks they set off over the lake.

An air leak would be sucking air at the carb or seperator, right? Stupid question but how do you test if something is sucking air vs a bubble test for leaking air (out)? do you spray a bubble solution and watch for it to get sucked in? hmm sucking question, maybe I should ask Sis :)

On a 2 stroke, spray ether (starting fluid) around the gaskets - you get a sudden rise in rpm. On a 4 stroke you spray WD40 and watch for white smoke but that doesn't work on a 2 stroke :)

Jake, We're leaving for the lake in a few minutes, probably will spend the night. Big fireworks show tonight.

Sis doesn't care suck or blow. Talk to you tomorrow.
