Just bought this 2001 Challenger 1800 w/ M2 jet. I started it and throttled up, ran fine at the previous owner’s house. I put it in the water, it started and ran Smokey at idle while I went to park the trailer. About 5 mins till I got back to wife in boat and she said it just died. I restarted it and shifted in to forward, it died... I did that several times, each time it took longer to start. Eventually I burnt out the starter solenoid. Being a Ford Mustang guy, I knew how to manually jump the solenoid. It started several more times. Some how I even got it to start while in gear froward and reverse. Soon after the battery was dead, I had to pull it to the launch and go home. Next day I started it again for 30 seconds or so. Since then I can not get it to start at all... I have spark at the plugs. Fuel after the pump and water separator. The plugs seem wet. I checked the key switch, kill switch and even the neutral safety switch on the shift lever. They are all fine. Not sure how to check injectors or oil mix pump??? I was told it ran fine the last time it was used 2 years ago.... I just ordered a shop manual for the engine. I have never worked on 2 strokes before. Any help would be great. I think I am missing some thing simple.:ack:

I have the same engine and the shop manual is really good. PN 90-877837. I think you can download it from this web site but I'm not sure. I have a hard copy. I didn't have the same problem but when you get the boat running you might also want to check the exhaust hoses for delamination on the inside. The orignal hoses are starting to fail after 9 years and it restricts the exhaust flow. I couldn't get past 3000 rpm on the water.

The manual has a good troubleshooting tree in the fuel injection section that covers almost everything that could go wrong. The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is something that causes a lot of problems at idle. The manual tells how to test it with a volt meter.

Once you get it running it's a great boat.

M2 checks

Did you empty the water separator filter that collects water?
Is the fuel pressure around 36 psi at the vapor separator?
The service manual is going to recommend to check all the sensors.
Here are some of the resistance checks that you can do:
Air temp sensor
Engine head temp sensor
Stator coils
Trigger coils
Here are some voltage tests that you can do:
Throttle position sensor (TPS)
Battery voltage

The manual says you need a special cable to test the TPS but there is a way around that. You will be checking the voltage from the blue wire to ground. You can use a needle to poke thru the insulation of the blue wire to measure the voltage to ground. If you remove the TPS to do a resistance check it is just a 10K pot. The blue wire is the center tap.
