In order to get rid of the oil in the crankcase, you need to keep cranking the engine over without the plugs in. If there is alot of accumulated oil, it will take several minutes of cranking to blow it all out. When I did my neighbours it took at least 15 minutes before he tried starting it. When it did start, it blew alot of oil out the exhaust.

IMO a plugged exhaust was a very unlikely source of your problem. Your problem is accumulated oil in the crankcase.

Good luck

Your starter more then likely hates you now. :)
I really have nothing valuable to add to this thread, but hope you get her running! you still have some time before next season:thumbsup:

What is the compression now? If it is normal then the problem lies elsewhere. If it is still crazy high, then there still must be more oil in there.

I just pulled the motor back out, dumped all the oil in the base out it was completely full up!!!!! Should I pull the bottom end apart and change crank seals and rotory valve seal?

Where did the oil come out, from the crankcase or the rotary valve shaft oil bath? That crankcase is divided into three sections, PTO side cylinder, rotary valve oil bath, and Mag side cylinder. The oil bath for the rotary valve shaft (there is a fitting on each side of the engine for it) should be fairly full.

Iv looked at some complete gasket sets and it says includes oil seals for crank shaft are those the ones I need to replace? I found another page that talks about "inner crank seals" if anyone has a link to the seals I need or a gasket set that has them in it please send it to me

Inner crankshaft seals (seal off the rotary valve shaft oil bath) are only serviced with a complete crankshaft rebuild- something the normal person cannot do, you need to purchase a rebuilt crankshaft.

If you really like the ski, buy a rebuilt motor. Otherwise just ride as is, which is what I would do. The oil should have come out of the crankcase.

Just a thought, but how long has this ski been sitting? I bought a 580 that had been sitting for over 2 years. The Mag side had a lot of oil in it, Ran it all summer with no issues. a slight leak from a bad seal, might not amount to much if the ski is used regularly. Gravity will keep that leak going 24/7. it will seep year after year, with or without running. So if its been sitting a long time, the seal might appear to be a lot worse than it is.

he says it locking up. so the skis not going to run like that.
mike is it filling back up with oil when she locks up?
if its not filling back up i would say thats not the problem.

Initially the problem was high compression which would be caused by oil. Now it is locking up, not sure what is going on either.

There was a pile of oil in the base when I pulled the motor out, I'm gonna put it back in and watch to see if the oil in the reisvor drains back in

ii think it still high compression. i think he also said it was locking up unfder high compression. im using my phone it could be a dirfrent thread im thinking about.

Any ideas on how to suck the oil out with out pulling the motor?

The service/shop manual for the 92 XP (section 3, water-flooded engine)indicates there are crankcase drain plugs at the bottom of the case under the carb. Are we speaking of a different beast? The 580/yellow engines I have have the drains. These are standard 1/8 inch pipe threads so you can connect any type of fitting such as a 1/8 to hose barb and drain in place into container. Seemed to me to be a good idea, cannot figure out why it was eliminated except that it was an extra step in the mfg process ... or maybe it was figured we were so good we would never sink the ski?
Rod

Would installing a oil pump block off and just premixing the fuel solve this? Would there still need to be oil in the base for lubrication? Or would I simply drain the base and run premixed?

No the rotary valve bath needs to have oil in it and the seals for that bath are the ones that are leaking.

Im telling you though you cant judge it till you get it running then let it sit. Many leaks are from just sitting and the seals hold well enough when you get the machine on the water. Letting them sit is worse then them being run frequently.

Alright thanks for all the input! I'm gonna throw it back together and see how bad it leaks I'm just waiting on some gaskets

Update, got everything back together tonight, got it running ran for a few minutes, then shut it down. Came back out about 3 hours later and it was locked up due to oil again. Also noticed a significant drop in oil level in reservoir. Anyone have any ideas that doesn't involve dumping a pile of money into it? Thanks again for all the help!!!!
