need help please ! ........ Hood Support Gas Shock Replacement

Happy 4th of July everyone ! My 2006 GTX needs a new gas shock support for the hood. The first time i installed the new shock, i compressed the shock and held it in place with cable ties while installing. But because the triangle lever was bent it didn't stay on more that a couple of weeks of usage. There must be an easier way to install the new gas shock, maybe by taking the hood off or loosening it? what am i missing. any thoughts? thank you in advance for any help. JR

update.. i compressed the gas shock about 3/4" and wrapped a wire around it to hold it. connected both ends to the ball ends and cut the wire.. we'll see what happens.
