2002 GTI, low compression on the PTO cyl. pulled the engine, popped the head, rear piston and top ring broke with some missing pieces. cylinder isn't even scratched. or discolored.

The rotary valve has a hole worn in it.

I removed the cylinders and pistons, still had the old cage less needle bearings, caught them all.

I have found pieces of the piston and pieces of the rings in a small whole in the front of the block angled down toward the mag and also same stuff in the rear hole in the block angled down toward the PTO. (this hole is maybe 3/16 to 1/4") and I don't know where it goes.

I used a pick and a magnet to get all the pieces I could see. rods and crank seems fine.

My question is how do I clean out the block to make sure all the pieces are out before I put the top end together and replace the rotary valve?

Some of you guys must have done this and found an easy way.

Please share. :bigear::bigear:

Unfortunatly... If you don't want to do it a second time... take the engine out, and split the case to make sure every thing is clean. It only takes on little missed piece to kill the new top end, or destroy the crank bearings.

Sorry that I don't have the answer you were looking for, but if you get lazy with this one... it could cost you a lot more money and time later..
