I have a 1997 GSX 800. I purchased it over the winter and it is in excellent condition. Did a compression check and both cylinders are at 145 PSI. The jet ski had the grey fuel lines so I replaced all the fuel lines, filter and fuel switch. In addition I rebuilt both carbs. Now that I have it back together I am finding it hard to start. Each time it must have the choke on to start and once it starts I notice it bogs on low end when I try to rev it up. If I give it a little choke it seams to help out. I have not had a chance to get it out on the water yet due to the weather but this is what I am seeing running on the trailer. What could be my issues?

Thanks

Did you use an oem carb kit. Do not run it like that. If you have to pull the choke your running lean. You will burn up the pistons at the very least.

Yes I used a oem carb kit. The only items I didn’t use was the black springs as my carbs had silver springs in

I would say switch to the black ones but wait until the carb guys chime in. We have some great carb guys on here.

If you haven't seent this yet check it out, The Seadoo Carb Rebuild Thread
Coastiejoe is right you are running lean and can do damage. Choking it is richening up the mixture. Could be a dirty circuit in the carb or your fuel pump discs are backwards, sucking air and a few others

Rebuild them again.
This time use half a can of carb cleaner per carb spraying through the pilot jet hole.
Make an adapter out of 1/8th fuel line and the carb can tube. You can thread it in like the jet.
Works better when you take the jet out anyway. It really takes that kind of cleaning to get the ports clear enough.
Also do that with the low speed screw closed for the first bit and then open 1/2 turn and finish.
Then re-install the black springs. You need a lower pop off to get that low end back. As in aim for 30-38 psi. Might not be possible if your carb body's are worn, as in the hole the spring goes in has worn down and you can't get the required pop off pressure.
According to the manual you still have a 70 pilot jet and no accel pump which is good.

I'm concerned about that 145 psi though. Did you hold it full throttle? have you had a look at the pistons?
Or do you trust the gauge to be accurate?
Once it get

Yes, your ski shouldn’t have silver springs. Yours takes the black ones and are the exact carbs in my carb rebuild thread.

145 is fine on a 787.

I have never heard of the spring hole ever wearing out or can even see how that would be possible.

Ok here is my plan. I will remove both carbs again. I will do a major cleaning of the pilot jet area and make sure I am getting fluid out of all the holes. In addition I will install the black spring and do a pop off test on both carbs to make sure they are within the range and both are close to each other. Anything else I should check on when I have the carbs apart again?

I order replacement jets last night. I figure if I am going to take apart the carbs again I want to make sure they have the correct jets in. Most likely they do but you never know what someone may have used just like the spring. I will rebuild the carbs again this weekend and see what happens. Thanks for everyone's help

If carbs are good and it still bogs when you snap the throttle then look at the crank seals.

On these skis crank seals are one of the last things to cause a bog. It is almost always the fuel system.
The cranks seals will either cause a runaway if it is the outer or hydrolock from oil in the cylinders if it is the inner seals.

Update: I pulled both carbs off and took them apart again and did another major cleaning. At the same time I changed out the jets and added the black springs. I did my pop off test and both are about 35 issue. I also did a pressure test on the carbs to make sure they were not leaking and found one small air leak and fixed it. One thing I did notice is the linkage between the two carbs was causing the PTO carb to be open part way so I adjusted the linkage so both carbs are the same. Put everything back on the jetski and it sounds much better. Will not really know until I can get it out on the water. Thanks for everyone's help
