Can't speak for that year because on newer 'ic' machines the option needs only to be plugged in to show up _but_ won't show if the component isn't there. IE my RXT-iS doesn't show depth nor does the option appear in the various mode settings. However if I bought the transducer from the same year GTX and plugged it in, the display will make use of it without any programing etc.
I'd suspect in your case the MPEM was swapped at some point with maybe a GTX Ltd, they came with depth and otherwise were pretty much the same machine for everything else. That probably also means if you can find the transducer on ebay etc it will work if wired.
