'96 GSX - Hours show "----"

Hey all,

I recently purchased a '06 GSX that had a bad Info Center gauge, it was completely dead.

I replaced the gauge with a used one from eBay (Same model/year), plugged everything in and all works great except the Hours.

When I scroll to the hours it just shows "----".

It is my understanding that the hours should be stored on the onboard computer and the gauge should be getting that info from the computer?

Does anyone know what would cause the hours not to display? Any idea how to fix it?

Thanks,

You may have to take it to a dealer to have them check the MPEM, and set the new display.

What do you mean by 'set the new display'?

I asked the dealer about it and they didin't seem to act like they had a clue as to what would fix it.

If I can tell them exactly what need to be done, hopefully the'll know what/how to do it.

I'm not 100% sure on the "BUDS" software... but I know that the fuel injected Polaris water craft... the display kept a separate hr meter, but the computer also had a timer. When you change the display, you have to set the time.

On a SeaDoo, the MPEM holds the time... and if there is a conflict between the display clock, and the MPEM clock... it may just go blank. (this is the part I don't know for the new displays) At the minimum... you should have a dealer check to see if the MPEM has a "Run Time" in it's memory, or if it lost it.

I talked to my dealer about this, and they didn't know, but offered to call BRP to get an answer..

They got off the phone with BRP, and said that the new-used gauge probably has a different software/firmware version on it then the gauge that came with my ski and in order to fix it would have to install the different software versions available for that gauge 1 at a time untill they found the correct one that would work..

Sounds kind of silly that there isn't a better/easier way to find the correct software/firmware to work properly, but if that is waht BRP told them, then I would have to hope it's correct..

That said, I know there isn't much to the computer system on a '96 GSX..
