Got a 95 SeaDoo Challenger boat. Key will not engage. Have power to blower, lights, etc. Is there any way to test for the key? , 1 , Or on this older unit to test to see if it is the DESS giving me the greef. Can it be by-passed??

1996 Challenger.....?

The first year the Challenger was made was 1996. So, your boat is not going to be a 95......Look at the back of the hull on the right hand side. You'll see the HIN numbers. The last 2 digits tell you the year of the boat.

You cannot bypass the DESS system. Sounds like your post may be bad. When you put the lanyard on the post, do you get any beeps? If not. Try this.

Here's the procedure for the advanced diagnostic test......With the lanyard off the post, press the start/stop button 5 times. You should get one short, one long beep. Then, put your lanyard cap on. How many beeps do you get now.

You can use our search engine above and type in DESS post test. There have been a couple posts made in testing this.

It's a magnetic switch and the lanyard has a ROM (read only memory) chip in it, that if it cannot communicate with the mpem, will not start.

If the post is bad, loo to the upper right of this page, you'll see a link to the "Seadoo Warehouse". There, you'll find your part. Not very expensive and you won't need to re-program the mpem. If it's the lanyard, the advanced diagnostic test I just gave you will tell you so. Good luck

Yes. Looked over everything I could find. I'm lost on this one. Is it possible the MPEM is out of it? I can run tests if you got any ideas... Thanks FOLKS

You need to be sure the wires from the battery are clean and making a good connection. Check the ground wire going to the engine by the starter. If the wiring is good, open the MPEM,(Multi Purpose Electronic Control Module) and check the fuse in the box. It might be blown. Check this out and get back to us.

Still searching

Opened up MPEM , found fuses at main unit ok, found 1, 20 amp by itself, ok. Are there any more to locate? Everything looks to be in pretty good order. I am going to clean up connection at starter yet but I'm lost. Boy is this a butt buster

Ok gang, I'm back at it. Cleaned all terminals and am now going to have to get at the MPEM. Is there anything that needs to be tested before it gets taken out. Once I hooked up all power , the pump came on for it's usuall 15-20 seconds and all other electrical works. I got my extra key also to try it out and still no beeps or anything related to getting this thing to start. What do ya think ??? Does the starter itself have anything to do with the DESS if it would go bad?
