My speedo only works sometimes!

My ski is working great. However, one thing is really annoying me. Its my speedo.

It works then it doesn't work. More like jumps around. I have searched Seadoo forum and I have found some advice. My problem seems to be different to others.

Testing the speedo on the trailer, I have found that if I spin the wheel by hand, the speedp will work. It will work for 5 or so flicks and then the speedo wont work.

This is where this problem is weird. If I remove the lanyard from the post and then reconnect it, the speedo will work for another 5 flicks and then wont work.

Any ideas guys? Where do I start?

I have tried to measure the resistance from the speed sensor back plug when the speedo is and not working, but i get the same result, an open circuit. Am I testing this right?

Not going to let it beat me!

After some more testing over the weekend I have found that the speed sensor will work for 30 secs and then quit. Put the lanyard back on the post and it will work for another 30 secs and so on.

During the 30 seconds of the sender unit working, voltage at the plug inside the bilge is around 6volts. Spinning the paddle wheel slowly the voltage goes up to 8 or 9 volts or so. As soon as 30 seconds pass, voltage drops to 0 volts at the plug and doesn't move from 0 volts even if I turn the paddle wheel! So this proves that the sender unit is working but only for 30 seconds!

Do you guys think that the paddle wheel sender unit is broke? Or something else?
