MPEM Problems

Hello, I’m a newbie to the forums. I just bought two 1996 Sea-doo Bombardiers and seem to be having trouble with the MPEM. I keep blowing the 5 amp fuse and have read from these forums that normally indicates problems with the MPEM. I also PM’ed All Things Custom as recommended in another thread. Since that PM I moved the MPEM from the one Jet Ski that was working over to the other that was blowing the fuse. I could not get it to start but I did get the lights to flash on indicating that the switch was finally receiving current. However, when I reinstalled the good MPEM into the other Jet Ski that was working it would not start. The lights would flash with one long beep. I now have two Jet Skis that I cannot get started. I am not sure if I somehow ruined the good MPEM or if I just did not reinstall it correctly. I read somewhere that lanyards need to be reprogrammed so I’m wondering if that is one of my issues.

I’m hoping someone here could help me troubleshoot this problem. I think it is the MPEM but I am confused why the good MPEM would not work when I switched it over to the Jet Ski that was not working. I’m even more confused why I could not get the good Jet Ski to work when I reinstall the good MPEM. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem the 5 amp fuse is blown in my 97 xp and also the 15 amp near the starter relay. I posted a while ago so with out a reponse. I really hope its not the MPEM but its kinda looking like it.

I would have thought that the fuses are there to protect the MPEM but seams like alot of people have this problem. seams like a poor design.

Thanks for the response Josh. In my case I think water may have gotten into the MPEM. My Jet Ski was running fine and then just died out in the middle of the lake. When I started investigating the problem I noticed that the cover was not closed all the way on the MPEM. I fear that some water may have gotten in there so I guess I can blame the fuse this time around.

Does anyone know if lanyard would have to be reprogrammed if I removed the MPEM to test it in another Jet Ski? This is what is really got me stumped right now. Thanks in advance for the help.

no, the mpem will still be programmed to the orig lanyard. did you try the lanyard that went with the switched mpem when you put it in the other ski? the mpem doesn't know or care what ski it is in. it just wants to see the lanyard that it is married to.

I figured out my problem i traced it all the way back to the three yellow wires that go into the motor. They go to the magnito? not sure on the spelling but thats what the schematic looks like in the shop manual. That thing is kind of hard to follow because they have different engines in there so it bounces around.

hope you find your problem

I have the same problem and just made a post tonight in regards to my 15 amp fuse blowing on the jet ski. Have a look at the post and tell me if you think it sounds similar. Hte post is called "98 gtx limited 15 A fuse blowing". I tested my stater and am trying to determine if it is the stater its self or the triger coil?
